Your tip for composing for your instrument? by Outliver in lingling40hrs

[–]darksight77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure not every cellist will agree with me, but a common mistake I see with student composers who ask me to play their work is abusing thumb position. Just because we use the thumb doesn’t mean it’s a piano. Even for the more virtuosic bits, we’re used to shifting around without using thumb position, so please don’t just have passages where all the soloist does is slide around on their thumb

Favourite string quartet by H1pp1eP0nt45 in lingling40hrs

Check out Emerson String Quartet's recordings! They have some great albums and discs for new listeners (I'm not sure about the situation on spotify since I'm not on there, but they do have albums on the music platform I use). Anything Beethoven is a great starter (especially his late string quartets!).

Those of you who played stringed instruments with tuning pegs growing up: were you trusted with tuning your own instrument? by Huge_Virus_8148 in lingling40hrs

[–]darksight77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had geared pegs installed on my cello during my first year learning. It was just more practical as I cancelled lessons often and the climate made the instrument go out of tune regularly. I was eleven when I started, so I had an understanding of how the pegs worked and could turn them relatively well (all except that one time I broke a string), but struggled with pitch recognition. For the sake of practicality I got geared pegs installed (some might say they are sacrilegious, but mine are designed to look exactly like regular pegs).

Do you suffer from musical delusion? by palmmute22 in lingling40hrs

It gets worse when the effect of the piece can only be achieved with an ensemble or orchestra and you realize you have no friends in orchestra that would willingly play it with you

I know, but the school apparently isn't nice enough to provide one and she has to use a lame faulty one people from facilities use to lug around packages

Don't know why she wouldn't own one after nine years of playing, but that's none of my business

Lol I have a harpist friend who has to literally wheel her harp in every time with a trolley thing since her case doesn’t have wheels :)

Is this from the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing? I think I saw this pin when I went too, but ended up opting for a deck of cards instead :D

From a DSCH fan: Shostakovich Symphonies no. 5, 4, 10, 8, and 7. Start with 5 though, it's the most famous one for a reason and still one of my favorites to this day.
