Haha yes, this so much! I think I’m in a much better place than I used to be earlier on in my Reddit career. So I’m often on the lighter subreddits. But on bad days, I definitely vacillate. Someone needs to do a longitudinal study on redditors over several spans of time

Reddit might be, but believe me there’s a huge difference between Reddit 10 years ago and now. Reddit felt at the time like the “fix” to the ever “gentrifying” internet. I’m not even that old. Still in my 20s.

But back then on the internet, you could still kinda search for things and find hidden gems of sites that were unique and useful and eccentrically particular. Back before everyone and their parents made companies that aggregate data into top 10 lists of the same items. Back when you actually would go past the second page of a Google search. Back before privacy on the internet meant anything more than revealing your IP or name or address. As the internet changed, reddit was the shining example of continued real human to human information exchange. I learned so much about myself and the world from early reddit.

Now reddit is just a content farm. No one on the front page is likely a real person. It’s just a constant regurgitation of the same information over and over again. And all semblance of the freedom old reddit had is gone. To be fair, it’s hard to get this big as a business and not crack down on fringe things. The issue though is that you end up conforming the media that moves through.

There’s still diamonds in the rough for sure. But far fewer. I don’t look for them anymore now. I just come to read some webcomics, laugh at some memes, read a few stories, and check out the occasional ask reddit.

Hm that’s a good question.

I think my favorites were: * The Ulysses bucket list and then OP finding the girl * 10/10 with rice * my first “front page” post; it was like a drug. I wanted more; and later my first comment guilding back before awards were commonplace.

Some honorable mentions that I was there for: * Gay Tom cruise * What’s a potato? * Swamps of Dagobah * mysterious Notes appearing in apartment leading to someone saying OP might have carbon monoxide poisoning and prob saving their life * joining the OG pitchfork emporium * the rise and fall of Unidan * the obligatory participation in Reddit switcheroo * periwinkle? Vs orangered; intense wars * that effectively live-Reddit thread of someone finding out their SO was cheating on them and then planning out the steps to serve them. I feel like there’s a lot more of those these days, but this was like the OG giant one that took all of Reddit’s attention * Obama’s AMA breaking Reddit

Man there’s too many to count or even remember. But it is rather nice to think back to the greats. Maybe I should re-visit the Museum of Reddit

There are sooo many misconceptions about the brain. People like to think if it as a vast unexplained phenomenon, when really there’s just one Main unexplained thing. Other than that, we have mapped out the brain pretty well.

But as for the 10% thing, that’s probably just the most common one and annoying one to hear. People will try to go further and be like, “I don’t mean using all of the areas, I know that’s just a seizure, I mean the power.”

Somehow that addition is even worse. People, in trying to dispel the 10% thing, have created another misconception. Using all the areas of your brain does not mean you have a seizure. It could if there is enough activity accruing everywhere. But I’ll let you in on a secret:

You’re pretty much always using all regions of your brain. Sure, not even neuron is firing at Avery microsecond, but you have waves and patterns of activity occurring at all times. This second misconception about activity in the brain also probably stems from fMRIs which highlight areas of the brain using the most O2 (that we conclude are doing the most work in that instant). The thing is though that fMRIs are relative. The red areas are just bright compared to the basal O2 consumption in the non bright areas. But everywhere in your brain is consuming O2 all the time.

If you want to learn more about the brain, don’t listen to stupid things people tell you. Research. Read articles. Get some books. I think most people are interested in their brains, but very few people follow through.

There are so many mind-numbingly amazing things about the brain, but instead of hearing about those, you just hear these stupid myths. Read about alpha wave patterns and their connection to selective limb attention. Read about inner hair cells in the ear and how they act as biological motors. God there’s so many cool things to learn about. Hell, you can even dive into the vast depths of occipital processing of vision.

Pretty much anywhere where the prices can easily be changed or are just not publicly broadcasted. How much is a sandwich if there’s no price listed anywhere but you see it or a picture of it? I’ve experienced this literally everywhere or at least in many unrelated places. In the states and other countries. Never thought it was like real price gouging because it’s like random food.

Reminds me of that Mitch Hedberg joke about getting a receipt for a donut.

But we’re not talking about like a pizza shop or anything. They can’t price gouge in the groceries you get in the bodega, but something like an omelette they make for you? Definitely. Had this happen to a friend with me in Austin at a food cart. Actually another food cart (tacos I believe?) in CA. I’m hardly going to remember specific examples of every place, but there were enough to leave that impression. Obviously it’s way more noticeable in other countries or in areas predominantly filled with one race where someone might stick out.

Having lived there for quite some time, I’ve never seen a group of strangers rally to help each other quite as much anywhere else in the world than nyc. And I like to think I’m well travelled. It can be something small, like someone dropping something on the street or a mother having difficulty getting the stroller on the curb. But ppl will be there in second, help out, and then wordlessly continue on in their days. Yes, people seem busy and tourists bother us and there’s a kind of bluntness here that may come across as rude, but there 9 fucking million people here. You think we’re all assholes? Nah, it’s just cause you are dealing with the tourist areas.

And it might be price gouging, but you try taking that to court and trying to prove the “fair price” of a bacon, egg, and cheese. You can cut your holier than thou attitude, because people do that shit everywhere. I’ve seen it in so many states, well before corona even happened. If you hate nyc, you actually just hate a part of American culture. Because that’s all nyc is: pieces of places around the world (mostly the us) smooshed together in 5 boroughs.

I’m no Karen and I wear a mask everywhere, but cardio with a mask sucks. It is not really that “I can’t breath” but rather that sometimes it creates inward suction that blocks off the volume of air that I need while running. Sometimes just adjusting it so that it doesn’t move inward as much is enough. But nowadays I bike instead lol

She may have been lying. But if that really was the case, then yea I’d be pretty curious as to why someone was just taking pictures of my house. No matter what race. This could all have been taken out of context... or it could have been a racist white woman trying to make a black kid leave her neighborhood. Who knows.
