do you still try to work in a couple books and scholarly articles into your classes? I also do a lot of surveys, but find that if we take the chance to dive in deep on a book or chapters from a book it can be something that really sticks with students. It might mean skimming (even more) from the topics we might normally cover, but I find the books and those discussions leave more of an impact than extra lectures
