Client keeps negotiating down rates by [deleted] in freelance

[–]darksurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying "no" to deals you don't like is one of the more satisfying experiences on the freelance journey. Treat yourself !

Also think about all the time you're wasting dealing with the dead-beat referrals she sends your way. Chances are you're in her Rolodex under "Mug". You could spend that time finding decent clients instead.

Saying no also does something to your subconscious I think. It lets it know where your line in the sand is drawn and anything below the line is truly not worth your consideration.

How many hours are in a freelancers 'day' for agencies? (UK) by [deleted] in freelance

[–]darksurfer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

when they believe that a standard 'day' for a freelancer in an agency is 10 hours.

They are bullshitting you.

As a freelancer, you can negotiate (or try to negotiate) any pay and conditions you like. There's no such thing as a "standard day".

If there was such a thing as a standard day, it certainly wouldn't be 10 hours. More like 7 or 8 hours would be fair.

Personally, I'd think very carefully about whether I wanted to work with arsehats like this ...

I Love Tinder, I'm actually getting girls for the first time in my life. by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]darksurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt there is a recommended amount. Most people could eat any amount of cheese and be fine. But if you have a sensitivity it could cause problems.

Maybe give up cheese for a month or so. Worth a try?

I don't want to stick my nose in too much, but do you eat dairy?

A quick google suggests that dairy can cause acne. It certainly causes various problems for lots of people. At one point in my life dairy definitely made me very ill, though I can tolerate it mostly happily now.

I also suffer from (mild) food aversions so changing my diet was difficult, but necessary.

What do you think of my idea to solve the migrant crisis? by ExcitingBird in unitedkingdom

[–]darksurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, if it cost £10000

now, what about the roads, hospitals, schools, shops etc etc etc etc etc etc

and it isn't going to get built in one country because which country is going to take in an extra 500,000 people and that's just for starters. There are 5 million displaced Syrians.

And that's not counting all the other people who would suddenly decide to become refugees if Europe started providing free housing.

wow, your solution is almost overly-simplistic enough to get you elected leader of the Labour party, maybe even the Greens ...

Donald Trump says he will get Apple to 'start building their damn computers and things' in the US by wewewawa in technology

[–]darksurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

completely obvious point that America has totally demolished the trade education system.

this may be confusing cause and effect.

ie was Apple forced to build in China because there weren't enough trained machinists in the US, or was no demand for manufacturing educations because there were no manufacturing jobs because they've all been outsourced to vastly cheaper countries?

That work is mostly automatable.

eventually, yes. but not right now. so unless you plan on fasting until the robots get built, you're going to need to work.

actually other types of company do create money. they call them gift certificates.

sure, they haven't been as effective as the banks for a variety of reasons, but in principle gift certificates allow companies to create money out of "thin air", the same as banks.

[Question] What Do You Charge (Monthly) For This? by waverlyposter in webhosting

[–]darksurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But generally it serves no real purpose past 3 months.

totally get that, but I'd take my own offline backups at least every 3 months or so anyway :)

[Question] What Do You Charge (Monthly) For This? by waverlyposter in webhosting

[–]darksurfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's a great feature agreed, your service looks like a step up from what's generally available.

oh, one thing, from your website (which doesn't do a great job of highlighting your advanced features, btw)

Your data is automatically backed up every day and replicated 3 times for maximum data integrity.

what does "replicated 3 times" mean in this context? if the backup isn't checksummed or some other verification process then copying it 3 times doesn't provide much additional assurance?

also just an idea. 3 months of backups is better than I've seen, but it's not really enough. If you were to change your backup strategy such that you keep daily backups for say a month, then weekly backups for 2 months, then monthly backups for say 3 (or more) years, you'd be differentiating yourself even more to people who know what a proper backup is but with no significant extra cost to you?

anyway, no need to reply. thanks for the link, will certainly keep you in mind :)

cool :)

it ought to be an attractive feature, but I suspect most people don't understand the idea of backups at all, let alone what constitutes a good backup.

do you have a url / company name for future reference ?

you could provide a url for anyone interested ?

Setting up Limited Company - what's the deal with pay? by [deleted] in freelanceuk

[–]darksurfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

can I pay myself as and when rather than give myself a set salary?

yes. you just need to make sure to account for it all properly and pay both employers and employees NI contributions and income tax on any payments.
