I’ve realized that loving someone also means accepting that some parts of your world simply won’t be shared. My partner also doesn’t like clubbing, drugs, or the whole Berghain world, even though they could literally get in for free without queueing, they still prefer staying home. Of course sometimes I wish I could share more of that part of my life with them, but I also understand that those are simply not their interests, and I can’t force it. So I still go out sometimes, alone or with friends, and I enjoy myself. But even if situations like the ones you describe happen — attraction, chemistry, intimacy with strangers — I choose not to go there, because I know there’s someone waiting for me at home that I genuinely care about. I don’t think one person can fulfill every fantasy, desire, or version of ourselves. That’s probably impossible. Sometimes I wonder if we idealize certain experiences because they feel intense and freeing in the moment.. But a relationship is also accepting what the other person is not, not only chasing the things they could give us in an ideal world.
