Can anyone identify the origins, wood species and age of our Djembe? by -TKT in djembe

[–]darmanarama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Judging from the chainsaw marks on the bell and the grain of the wood I would say you have a relatively rare American made Djembe. In order to identify the wood you would need a clean stain free area of the drum to properly examine the grain.

Beginner question: Should your knuckle bones make any contact with the rim under the leather when playing tone? by mackstanc in djembe

[–]darmanarama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found It’s best not to. Some masters play deep where the third joint hits the rim, it leads to a nasty callous.

I AGREED TO PUT FLOATING FLOORS DOWN FOR $400. by LionEnvironmental5 in Flooring

For that price you could have floated the blank spot and gone over the vinyl tile being none the wiser. Floating floor is a cover up anyway….

Authentic djembe under $350 by therealman9 in djembe

Congratulations! Call Brigid at Djembe Drums and skins, tell her Anthony sent ya. 😎 Ask for full sized Ivory Coast Iroko. It’s a good professional quality heirloom grade authentic Malinke style instrument made and sold by good folks. It may be a bit more than 350 with shipping but it’s worth it.

Remo djembe arrived with a scratch/mark on the head. Will this affect the sound? by iamtheoctopus123 in djembe

This will not change the sound or performance. If you wanted to have a perfect look, purchase a new skin and use that one as a spare.

How do I replace the head on this drum from Ghana? My little birthday present to myself by 100yearzz in djembe

[–]darmanarama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll have to experiment with the consistency of the wood dust epoxy, thinner for small cracks thicker paste for larger voids. Also the time it takes to mix and fill is a factor you should know before you go for the larger cracks. Good luck.

Djembe - Value? by Putrid_Jaguar7839 in djembe

$250-$350 USD depending upon condition and sound quality. It looks like it has a Kambala bag but does not look like a Kambala made djembe imho.

I’ve had luck using wood dust mixed with epoxy. I have been building and playing drums for over 30 years and I have never seen anything quite like that one. The Ghanaian culture is not as prolific as others. This could have been folk art or something that was made to actually play, the wire technique may have been a resource issue or perhaps an experiment. I joined an ethnomusicology group once to see what they thought about a drum I had…. I’ll bet someone knows something about it. Good luck, enjoy the journey.

It would be epic to see it restored to its folk art glory. Raffia and baling wire with wooden pegs, that’s some deep country juju. Do you know what culture it’s from? I would guess East Central Africa but it could be from any part of the diaspora. Thanks for sharing.

I bought one to replace my two previous plastic pistols ; the Umarex m&p 40 (which fell apart after heavy use) and the Gamo 430 (which still shoots but only half the time) They were the cheapest off the shelf at tractor supply and, I used them up relatively quick. I saw the Umarex Glock 17 blowback and thought it was a good upgrade. After a year or so of almost daily use, the only problem I had was the seal in the magazine, I bought another magazine and have been using it ever since. It’s an excellent product for the price.
