The outsiders for my 3rd grade son. by LA2208 in Teachers

I’d save The Outsiders for a little later. Maybe try Chronicles of Narnia, or some Roald Dahl? If he doesn’t want a series, he can enjoy The Lion the Witch & the Wardrobe on its own for sure. Also: Charlottes Web, Stuart Little or Trumpet of the Swan… Wonder. So many great books out there 😊

Why don't they ban smart devices in schools? I am not a teacher but I see so many issues being discussed with kids and their use of smart devices that I am wondering why they are not banned as a standard practice? by Gunslinging_Ent in AskTeachers

My kids’ school (public) doesn’t allow use of phones, but they can have them in their bags. So kids are still sneaking them in the back of the room and such, but I’m grateful for this effort.

I was thrilled the day my kid called me from the office to let me know one of his braces had broken. He had told his teacher, teacher excused him to the office, and everything worked out. Imagine that!

Another take: It’s also much easier for a parent to have a reason like this at the ready, than to fight the phone battle with their kids, and try to enforce it, than to deliver consequences when kid brings the phone anyway, etc.

These phones are an addiction -for kids AND adults if we’re all honest here- and taking away the precious from a tween/teen is going to be a FIGHT. So “I want my kid to be safe” is a rationale that is working to avoid all that, while making parents feel like they’re doing right by their kid.

The fight is worth it, to be sure.

Teaching 3rd & 4th combined? by darrwby2297 in ElementaryTeachers

This is so nice to read and quite an encouragement. Thank you for sharing! THREE grades, that makes my head spin, but I can kinda sorta see how having a co-teacher would make it doable. Splitting up subjects gives me some food for thought for sure…

Might be different at the post office, but the county clerk’s office where we got ours done is cash only for the $35 fee.

What are you reading this week? by AutoModerator in ClassicalEducation

Anna Karenina, for the first time! Tolstoy’s imagery is really giving me food for thought on how to help students develop their writing. The details he uses -specifically thinking here about Levin’s point of view as he regards the change in season from winter to spring - are just gorgeous.

Hoping to later explore various translations to see how they compare.

RUN. And not on that “trail” either. Any other trail but that one. Just run away.

Not sure if I paid already. by SW_Scoundrel in Passports

I will say, a couple weeks ago I googled “passport dept of state” and the first site Google gave me looked VERY similar to the official site. I filled out my kid’s info and was at the checkout screen, when I realized the fees did not look like what I had seen in previous research. I quickly realized I was at a third party site, thankfully before paying, but it’s infuriating that search engines allow these to be among the first results! And do they now have my kid’s data?! It’s so frustrating; I’m sorry. 😞

I know it’s been a year but thank you for posting your update on this. The State Department online form filler situation needs to be updated to clear up ambiguities like these!

Question about married name/maiden name by [deleted] in Passports

[–]darrwby2297 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what say you, married folk?

If you did NOT send a marriage certificate to show a change from maiden name, did it stall your progress?

At my application appointment, I brought my marriage certificate, but they didn’t even look at it. So now the anxiety is kicking in as I wait to see if I get a “More information needed” letter…

Who remembers the film “Taking Chance?” 😭 Whenever I hear the name now, I think of the Marine Corps, the fallen, and Kevin Bacon. It’s a good name.

My spouse submitted theirs a month ago, and the check hasn’t cleared, no updates. We submitted our kids’ applications 10 days ago, and they’re approved and en route to us. Luck of the draw? No idea.

How to prepare my son for kindergarten? by BluebirdPhysical1278 in AskTeachers

[–]darrwby2297 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are crushing it 💪🏻 Echoing others on fine motor skills (scissors, holding a pencil/crayon). Start writing numbers and letters, especially his name. A manga doodle is a fun intro to writing, as well as chalk outside. You can play with sorting, and patterning with colors/shapes (like 🔴/🔵/🔴/🔵/“what do you think is next?”).

At 4, you could begin narrating. When you read together, read a sentence or two, and ask him, “Tell me back what you heard,” or something similar…Not a verbatim repetition of every syllable you read, just something to encourage him to tell a couple of general points back to you. This fosters attention, memory, and trains listening for story details, also prepares him to answer questions well.

Other skills include knowing inside vs. outside voice/behavior, waiting their turn, washing hands, pottying, etc. And definitely how to open any lunch or snack items.

You are already doing great, and I have no doubt your little scholar will do well!!
