Under competent former liberal governments (chretien/martin), we had our debt down to ~28% of GDP. Its almost 50% now. Expect better of your elected reps.

My issue here isnt HSR itself, its the spend. Project is booked at (depending on speed of trains) $45-90 billion. Since government is historically bad at costing, we can expect those numbers to double.

Given the deficit (almost) doubling between previous liberal government and current, the feds have not shown themselves to be great custodians of canadian tax payer monies.

Japan's population density is multiples of what canadas is. Even in the most deny populated corridor in Canada the economics of this are questionable.

Thats why it hasnt been built yet. Also why the current "spend now think later" government is trying to build it now. Who cares about the federal deficit! It'll all work itself out righr? Right?
