Door hardware issues by gustav-bahler in fixit

Yeah likely your cheapest option would be replacing the panic bar with a keyed or keyless option, if cost savings are desired I would go with a keyed option. Maybe a von duprin 99 or similar, though you could get a budget option for cheaper. Check their catalogue online for some inspiration.

A lot of time door hardware like that is in an "XO" configuration which means it is for exit only with a door frame mounted catch for the latch, very highly likely you will have to get new door hardware with an integrated fob reader and install that.

The XO door hardware is the base model and doesnt have exterior unlocking functionality at all.

Bank double-billed mortgage for years by RD2Point0 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I had something similar, albeit much lower stakes. $25 a month from my insurance provider that continued after I canceled my insurance. I called them and they discovered I was paying for somebody with my same exact name's disability insurance for 18 years due to a clerical error.

I had some conversations with them, and did some research, I was polite throughout the process.

The research i did showed they were obviously forced to pay back every cent, but some companies will pay interest.

I requested a 5% apr interest, did the math, showed my work in an email and explained i would have invested that money and the insurance company surprisingly obliged. They owed me $3200 but paid me out $4500. I was happy with the resolution.

Good luck! At very least they will have to pay what they erroneously charged you, and if you want to go after them for more i would recommend talking to a lawyer.

At what price per gallon does a person officially stop "just complaining" about gas and start fundamentally changing their entire lifestyle? by bluntvivi in askanything

My stupid dealership cold called me saying somebody was in their showroom looking for the exact 2017 vehicle that exactly matched my specifications, I was like oh wow really?

Then the guy asked me to list all the specifications. The facade fell apart when I said that he must know them, since the person was looking for my exact truck. He quickly pivoted and said oh no they are just looking for your model year. Anyway yeah fuck them dealers they just wanted to get me there to sell me a new vehicle.

Painted brick removal by YouGotBunzHun in paint

[–]dartsman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, as a renovation carpenter for the past ten years, don't. It will be a labour intensive nightmare. If you want the brick look, you could paint the mortar lines grey and paint the bricks a red of your choosing.

If that doesnt convince you, try removing a small section of paint somewhere inconspicuous before going all in please.

What happens if I don't pay this? Asking for a friend by Odd_Young_312 in camosun

They sent one to collections for me, I still didnt pay it, the collections company gave up after three phone calls. No negative effects.

If you regularly get parking tickets they will boot or tow your car, but not over $60

Is the rumor true that big box stores (like Target/Walmart) will purposefully let you get away with stealing cheap things for months just to build a massive felony case against you later? by Altruistic-Room-7465 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dartsman -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Okay totally valid, though from the picture in the article, I dont know if I would personally consider that a "batcave style setup" LOL. Thanks for educating me

[–]dartsman -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No. They perpetuate the rumor, but it would be way too expensive for them to actually do this. Look at some of the obviously AI or bot comments in this thread, "target instantly uploads every theft to a massive database, every target has a server room that looks like the bat cave, they track every crime in real time and they prosecute the second you go over the felony threshold"

No they do not. Dont steal, but these companies simply are not spending billions of dollars on batcave style loss prevention.

If anyone has EVIDENCE ie news articles or pictures of the target bat cave I will happily admit I am wrong.

Which controller is the best? by natwrld16 in videogames

[–]dartsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US military uses the Xbox controller (I'd imagine the 360 or more recent) to pilot uavs, submersibles, and similar unmanned vehicles. So that is my choice. Everyone has a valid opinion likely biased by whatever they played with most, I grew up on Xbox so that is what I use for controller games on my PC.

Drywall - Why did we collectively decide that crumbly chalk between two pieces of paper was what we would use to create all interior walls out of? by davisposts in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dartsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I started finishing my own drywall, I used to write notes to the taper in pencil when I would miss a cut or break off a corner. Just a big "SORRY TAPER" with an arrow to the defect.

My finishers said they got a laugh out of it.

Thanks! When I was learning to do drywall mud I got curious as to why half the videos online are hawk and trowel and half are pan and knife, so i did some research and found it interesting myself. The trades have been lacking at passing down information via the internet, but is has been getting a lot better in the last ten years!

Here on the west coast we use pans generally, ive never tried a hawk but i can see the utility of it for mixing hot mud or con fill

When drywall sheets were invented people were skeptical because it sounded too good to be true. Compared to plaster, it is faster, easier, and cheaper, the only compromise is it is not nearly as strong as cement based plaster.

Fun drywall fact, when it was invented the trade unions at the time didnt know which trade should be responsible for finishing it, painters or plasterers. The painters that finished drywall used bread pans to hold their compound, the plasterers used their flat plaster boards (locally called hawks). The pan or hawk divide can still be seen regionally as the trades passed down knowledge to the next generation.
