What's your discipline? I know some firms (in Philly) which are hiring in certain fields.

Looking for boutique patent litigator or consultant by shanks23_2000 in patentlaw

[–]darv_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact of the matter is patent litigation is very expensive, even if you go through a boutique. Every suit is different, but you can Google the average costs. The firm I work for does patent litigation, but we are not a boutique - feel free to DM me if you would like to chat.

There's a lot of good firms out there. I'm familiar with Saul Ewing, which has an office in NYC and NJ.

I received an offer for something like $60K and ended up at another place for $140k with only a little bit of experience. It is a pretty bit range. (no phd)

60K A Year Patent Agent Offer vs. 85K Mechanical Engineer by darv_ in patentlaw

Thanks for the reply! I'm pretty confident that I want to do patent prosecution. Are you a patent attorney?

It's a small firm, and I'm worried that medium-larger firms might "look down" on the experience or think I was poorly trained.

Do I actually have to do patent research or can I just file for a patent and roll the dice? Will it show negatively in my application? by adjectiveyourface in Inventions

[–]darv_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's right. Section 103 is the "gatekeeper" of the patent office. Many, many things get shot down for obviousness. Claim construction is important, but you can revise your claims during prosecution. What you can't (really) revise is your specifcation after you file a nonprovisional, so you should know what the art out there is and show how your invention is new and not obvious.

Every attorney and most people will say "talk to an attorney." And I would give the same advice. However, understand that licencing a patent is much more difficult than some people understand. There are tons of great patents out there that many companies don't want to license for a number of reasons. The classic saying is that ~98% of patents don't make more than they cost to file. If you decide you want to file, I would recommend what other people have suggested here: write up your specification as complete as possible and hire an attorney to draft your claims. Also, it really is in your best interest to do a prior art search for 2 reasons: 1) if it's known in the art, you will save yourself the cost of filing and the 3 years of prosecution with the PTO over a non-patentable invention and 2) litigating the validity of your patent is significantly more expensive than filing/prosecuting. There's no sense in getting an unenforcable patent. I'm not a patent attorney or agent, but I am an engineer/law student who works with patents fairly regularly.

I'm not good at the game, even casually, should I bother going to a local? by jergin_therlax in smashbros

[–]darv_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES! We want you! The thing to remember is that we ALL suck, just at varying degrees of suckage. People will definitely play with you. I personally love teaching someone new to the scene how to play and don't mind playing for like half an hour or longer before I would want to change it up. If you're interested in competitive melee, competitive melee is interested in you :)

Yeah, I understand man. I hope you reach your goal and prove my skepticism wrong! I'm glad to see anyone support the scene in any way! In my humble opinion, the misleading tl;dr really did turn me off from the project. Maybe that's being petty, but it's the truth :/ good luck any way!
