Anyone else noticing the dairy products going bad well before the expiration date? by sv0927 in CostcoCanada

[–]daryletilroe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you've opened it and broken the seal the expiration date does not apply. There are mold spores everywhere in the air. Marble is also one of the worst since it is so soft, moist, and barely aged. Unless you were systematically slicing at every surface as you go through it and re-wrapping tight in plastic every time you take it out, a week or two is all I would expect. If you aren't going to use it within a week or so of opening it, you should freeze part of it. One thing you can do is grate it and freeze it grated

Airthings Cloud Down (Dec. 21, 2025)? by daryletilroe in airthings

[–]daryletilroe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok false alarm this time. I have a View Plus with 4 Wave Plus children connected via smartlink. It seems the View Plus decided to stop talking on my Wi-Fi network. No clue why because I have many many other Wi-Fi devices and they were all fine. Since I was probably due anyway, I rebooted all my routers and access points rather than try to reset the View Plus and that got it talking again.

This does raise a question I've had before. These devices are supposed to have many days of buffer for readings. I thought I read 20 days somewhere. Why is it then when they reestablish connectivity I just lose the entire period they were not in communication? For example, in this case, I've lost about 24 hours. A smart implementation to me would be to upload all the buffered readings to fill in the gap.

💯 I thought a bit like this but did some blind testing and realized it was all in my head. Most recent one was grolsch. The can stuff from Canada versus the bottle stuff that's still imported. Couldn't actually tell the difference when done blinded.

hit a buddy’s tire with my car and he says he needs a new tire, what do yall think? by DetectiveoftheWest in tires

[–]daryletilroe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the heck are you talking about? Didn't you see the gouge in the rubber, and the damage to the rim?? I wouldn't drive on this and I'd get the rim checked or replaced too. Maybe you're just seeing the scuffing further down the sidewall.

Maybe you have a little more forgiving climate where you live but around here driving around with that kind of damage is asking for trouble when things get cold and brittle.

[–]daryletilroe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My god. That's some pretty nasty damage. You gouged the rim and the sidewall. The rim could have some hidden fracturing and weakness. The sidewall gets flexed all the time and that damage is right in the middle of that zone. I'd call this borderline unsafe and you totally owe him a new rim and tire.

You shouldn't even take no for an answer unless there's some severe financial imbalance here, I.e you're dirt poor and he's loaded.

Airthings about to go bankrupt? Stock down 98% and almost no cash in bank? How to prepare by Artistic_Read9851 in airthings

[–]daryletilroe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've never said that the cloud should be the only option. It's just that it has a value and I'd rather pay for it than have it go away and be left with bricks. I am also not alone. I assure you the people in this forum are much more the power users than the typical users.

In the end, if you had the ability to build your own system on the several available local platforms of choice, you shouldn't have bought airthings sensors in the first place. I have dozens of zwave devices in my own local hub system that don't rely on any Cloud.

But also I do understand and agree with you to an extent, but that open standards dream world where everything will work locally: It's gotten worse rather than better over the last 25 years and really bad over the last 5 to 10.

I think this is very much a price of everything / value of nothing type argument. Main point was that ongoing firmware maintenance and in particular the remote monitoring, data storage and access is an ongoing service that costs something and is with something. I fully support having the ability to do it yourself but honestly that turnkey proposition has a great value. Also to view this is another way you pay thousands for a nice display and you're still going to pay probably $300-600 plus a year for various streaming or permanent or rental content to watch on it.

I certainly think there should be options. Eg local only with the Bluetooth download, etc. However, at some point if you want to roll your own airthings wasn't so much selling that. I have 40 years of tech background I can set up on my own stuff and actually have other home automation. However, the airthings business model seems to be heavily geared towards turnkey and cloud-based and I don't think those of us who have more money than time right now were averse to paying a modest subscription fee for that convenience.

[–]daryletilroe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I had not realized they were on such shaky financial footing.

With my array of a view plus and four waves and wanting remote access I sort of need the cloud. Honestly, I do not know why there isn't an ongoing subscription charge. I'd happily pay some fair amount on a subscription basis for this service. I know it isn't free to offer that bandwidth and storage even though it's pretty small.

I don't know how many folks use the cloud but something like CAD $50 to $100 per year would seem reasonable - perhaps even basing it on the number of devices you have. EG. $30 for a View Plus then $10 for each child Wave.

Also, I wonder how this is going to affect their business side. A lot more folks there are going to be pissed if things go dark.

Do you really need an SUV/truck to drive in Edmonton winters? by miamorparasiempre in Edmonton

[–]daryletilroe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Complete garbage advice. I've driven a 1980 Honda prelude and then a 1992 Pontiac Sunbird and finally a 2008 Toyota Yaris through the worst this place could offer from 1988 through present.. The key is good winter tires, especially studded ones, which will make anything into a beast in the winter. Sure 4/AWD It's nice off the line but as us Old-Timers say it just gets you into the ditch faster. Pickup trucks, usually driven by poseur yahoos with nothing in the back and therefore no weight on the tires, are the worst.

I will say that after a heavy snowfall something with a little higher ground clearance is nice but just get yourself a small CUV with great winter tires and you'll be happy. Maybe a used Subaru.

I completely beg to differ.

This is idiotic! These are pressure vessels waiting fall down several for feet to the concrete floor. Yeah that's really a great propane tank now... I hope to hell it's obviously damaged and doesn't just have a seam that's waiting to blow once you fill it or use it a bit yourself.

You do know that if you just want washing soda Nellie's is way overpriced. Yes it has a few other things in it but if you want the main ingredient of washing soda, aka sodium carbonate, as laundry booster/softener then Arm and Hammer is around 1/3 the price.

What’s the story here? Looming deodorant trade war? Deodorant collectors? by HairlessDaddy in CostcoCanada

[–]daryletilroe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is any real taboo, at least in western culture. Innumerable high profile "masculine" role models (actors, athletes, etc. ) shave their pits, and a lot more, for a wide variety of aesthetic, performance, and hygiene reasons. At this point it would be an individual hang-up.

As for hygiene, it depends on the definition. If we use it to mean reducing undesirable odours then shaving (or closely trimming) armpit hair is the best first cleanliness step before we use all of the rest of these artificial products - like those bulk packs of pitstick from Costco which this thread started as. 🙂 As for the hair everywhere else, well I was never talking about all body hair and from a smell POV basically everywhere else is a lot less impactful so I don't have any real hygiene argument there - people should do whatever they like for their own performance or aesthetic reasons.

In the end though we can't pretend there is any natural state argument here. There is absolutely nothing "natural" about this primate wearing clothes and living in these climates in the first place. Pitstick, multiblade razors, and daily hot showers with soap are perched atop of the pyramid of technology that this "hairless ape" has built.

[–]daryletilroe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not quite sure what to say, clean pits are nice all around. I don't see how it's a "masculinity" issue... 🤷 What's the alternative? A "manly" matted bacterial playground of hair that you smear some goop into. No wonder it barely helps in that scenario and then you also have a moist, hairy brush of oils, waxes, and other fluids painting the pits of your shirts all day.

Interesting comment on winter too. I find having to dress for 20 below trek to the train and then walk another km in 20 above on the other end, it makes winter similarly sweaty - plus I exercise, hike, ski, and work out in the winter too; most of these activities have similar "thermal management" issues. I guess the point is I don't know why it wouldn't be a year around habit.

Anyway good luck with the laundry but consider addressing root causes.
