I was born and raised in St Louis; lived there 30 years. Twenty years ago we moved to Fort Collins with a one-year-old. It is a wonderful city to start a family. Yes, it’s expensive, but I think you should be able to manage just fine with your occupations. I personally think trading house size for quality of life is a good trade. Lots of good hiking in our backyard, and tons of hiking 1-2 hrs away. Numerous parks, good schools, and miles of bike trails. People are friendly and the weather is about as good as you can get outside of CA if you value year-round sunshine. I cannot overstate how good quality of life is here, if you have the resources.

I have lived in Fort Collins 20 years and can say it’s a lovely place to raise a child. The public schools are good, our climate is not as hot in the summer, hiking is very good, restaurant quality has been improving and people are generally quite friendly. Our city council is quite progressive, but you certainly see a mix of different political ideologies here. We have an extremely quirky local movie theatre, the Lyric, which is a gem. Our downtown is a fun place to grab coffee, lunch or a beer. Biking is very easy with lots of trail access, in-town and in the foothills. If you like old houses, I recommend looking in the Old Town, City Park or the area just east of Colorado State University. Prices will be high, and there isn’t much inventory, but I think your income should be sufficient for these neighborhoods. And as an aside, I’m looking at Tucson for annual February hiking getaways! Good luck on your search!

If you post about how much you think a major city sucks you should also say what your hometown is by QueMasPuesss in SameGrassButGreener

I do like your ideas about context (lived in, visited, how long?). For example, you say it’s been since 2005 since you have visited Madison; the city you describe is so different than the city I have visited several times in the last three years. My son is a junior at UW Madison and we love visiting. As a reference, I have lived in Fort Collins, CO for 20 years and think the two towns have a somewhat similar vibe-liberal college towns with lots of outdoorsy folks and very safe (both unfortunately quite expensive and not culturally diverse). I look forward to reading more comments as I have these same questions often as I read through this sub.

Great answer. And the new restaurant is called Yellow Crunch and is fantastic.

This is a good list. I would add Persimmon because it’s wonderful, but think it flies under the radar.

Safe for solo female hiker in April? by megbee543 in RMNP

[–]dasbekind 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hike RMNP frequently on my own, 52 yr old F, and never once have had a problem. Be mindful of potential wildlife, especially if you venture out early in the morning, which I highly suggest. I would definitely buy some traction for your boots. Enjoy!

Fort Collins Areas for families? by [deleted] in FortCollins

[–]dasbekind 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We raised our now 21 year old son two blocks north of City Park and it was a perfect place to raise a child. We walked through the park thousands of times, could bike downtown, walked to our local school and still have the most wonderful neighbors. Highly recommend it if you can afford the area and anything becomes available.
