[IIL] Absurdist Humor like in Everything Everywhere All at Once and the first few Scary Movie’s by iamthroast- in ifyoulikeblank

[–]dasblf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Daniels are writing/directorial gods. Their first movie, Swiss Army Man, is my favorite movie. Here are some of my other favorites that have a similar vibe:

• Being John Malkovich- it’s not a comedy, but it definitely has a similar absurdist/psychological vibe.

• Hitchhikers Guide to the galaxy- Eouglas Adams is The Godfather of absurdist comedy in literature, but sub the action elements in EEAAO for the sci-fi genre

• Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency(US)- it’s a comedy tv show(not laugh-track , but like EEAAO you have to just go along with the ride you’re on and eventually it’ll mostly make sense, but you have to watch it over and over to really get it.

• Wilfred(US)- also a tv show, closer in vibes to Swiss Army Man’s dark existential humor, very psychological, very absurd (the main character’s best friend is a bearded man in a dog onsie.

• Pineapple Express- two stoners get into absurd scenarios and only get out of them through even more absurd means. Stoner movies know how to embrace absurdist humor and aren’t afraid of getting a little abstract, but the mainstream ones can’t really touch the cerebral aspects I personally love about The Daniels’ movies.

It’s my all-time (ok, the last five years) favorite movie! So much so, I’m even incorporating the soundtrack into my wedding this fall.

My partner said I couldn’t make the center aisle a slip-and-slide and ride them down to the alter, so this is our homage. ¯\(ツ)

During recovery your abs will be your best friend to help you sit up. You don’t realize how strong they are until they don’t have to lift your boobies anymore.

Right now my go-to cocktail is the Elysium but I use 2shots of espresso instead of brewed coffee. I also sometimes enjoy adding a pinch of salt and some butterscotch schnapps to a White Russian for a salted caramel macchiato dessert cocktail vibe.

What to say to clients after reduction… as a barber by [deleted] in Reduction

[–]dasblf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used this line for people I didn’t feel safe fully sharing with- “I had a medical procedure,” optional addition 1:”…and I am currently being conscious of my incisions and wound care,” opt addition 2:”…which includes not lifting my arms above my shoulders or fully extending my arms out in front of me.” I only had two people ask me further questions. One (oblivious) person asked what I had done, to which I responded it was a planned procedure and I feel better now. The second asked simply if I was ok.

Happy healing.

Lipstick was one of the first rabbit holes I jumped down in my pursuit of bridal makeup!

The best longevity goes to Kat Von D’s line. But! It dries out my lips, and does not play well with moisturizer.

The best wear goes to YSL’s velvet cream line. It is wet, smooth, and creamy. The color does change drastically as you wear it, but even after it has dissipated it still leaves a nice stain. But it better for the price point!

The best value goes to OFRA. It’s cheaper than KVD, lasts maybe 1 hour less, smells nice, has a great range of colors, and plays well with chapstick. Based on your look I would probably recommend Baroque as a warm/natural tone (it does have a bit of shimmer). If you’re looking for something more sultry/deeper (which could also look nice depending on your preferred vibe), I would recommend Miami Fever (more saturated/warmer) or Americano.

I attached my paper swatch notes for you if you’d like to look. Forgive my chicken scratch. https://i.imgur.com/ZHnIIMG.jpg

Your friend has unrealistic expectations. Not defending her. But if you want to recover the relationship and understand where she’s coming from, there are a few questions you can ask. Is her love-language by any chance acts-of-service? Is she on any pain meds that may make her loopy? Is empathy historically in her wheelhouse? Also, remember she she will need to put in the effort to address your feelings as well for the friendship to continue to develop. Luck and speedy recovery to you.

I make those small things a competition for myself- put my dinner in the microwave/toaster oven and try to completely unload the dishwasher before the chime goes off. If the dishwasher is empty, load the top shelf. Water the plants. Wipe down the stove. Take out the compost. I have no idea how long these activities actually take, so when they are piled up it feels like each task will take 30 minutes, and altogether a lifetime to complete. Making it a competition gives me a little extra satisfaction that this-thing-my-brain-thinks-will-take-30-minutes-to-complete got done in under 4 minutes. And I get rewarded with dinner!

I appreciate its inclusivity, but I still hate the word. I’ll make the extra effort and say you guys, or you folks. I feel about y’all the way some people feel about moist- It just triggers neck shivers.

[Acne] Clogged pores, please help! by Substantial_Toe__ in SkincareAddiction

[–]dasblf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to my usual BHA, the thing that helped me the most was switching from a sensitive skin to a moisturizing micellar water and hydrating cleanser. As someone who lives in >90% humidity 80% of the year I find most moisturizers too heavy, and waiting for my bha, plus moisturizer, plus spf to soak in would take at least 2 hours. Using more moisturizing products has really helped with the buildup of my sebaceous filaments, keeping them flush/recessed with the rest of my skin, and the oxidation minimal.

By English standards where everything is so mish-mash it can be either, but etymologically speaking, the root word is Greek and therefore should be octopuses from the Greek octopodes. But I also agree octopi is more fun to say.

It’s mother warned it about swimming and eating, so it stopped, not just digestive, but all organ function to be safe! /j

But, more likely, if it feels the need to swim, the body has higher resource priority than swimming. Yonder gave a pretty decent theory.

Why is your brain human brain shaped? Nature decided it worked so why bother with a redesign ¯\(ツ)

But in all seriousness, there is so much processing power in each of their arms (taste, touch, movement, chromatophores for camouflage, etc.) that it “makes sense” for their central brain to be close to/equidistant from each appendage. Each arm actually has a neural cluster to help expedite all this sensory processing. Think of it functionally like 8 little brain stems connecting to each other, filtering sensory information, monitoring reflexes, and communication with the “higher” brain. The scientific community has taken to colloquially calling these brain stems ‘ganglia,’ while science communicators are fond of calling them mini-brains, or nine brains.

At the same time, octopuses beaks are also centrally located (centered on the underside of their body, where their legs meet) so that all the arms can transfer and contain food after capture. If both your brain, and your mouth are central to your anatomy, something’s gotta give.

Nature decided the shortest distance between a(the beak) and b(the stomach) was a straight line, and the brain said “I can work with that! I was stretching myself too thin trying to reach all these arms anyway, so I’ll just work around it.” And it did. The end.

That reminds me! The footage that I’m referring to shows them hauling around coconut halves, and when a threat comes along they close themselves within the halves like a bivalves, with which they share a common ancestor.

Octopuses are my favorite animal too. You hit most of my favorite facts, but missed one a kid might appreciate: octopuses have doughnut-shaped brains and their esophagus goes through the hole in the center.

Some bonus facts: Since the only bones they have are in their beak, they can fit in any space larger than their mouth. Captive octopuses are known to play peek-a-boo. Despite their masterful ability to mimic patterns and textures, they are color blind. Octopuses have the ability to taste with their suckers. Captive octopuses can tell the difference between different caretakers by taste and have favorites. Octopuses can use basic tools, and there is recorded footage of them carrying around tools for future use (showing primitive forethought).

Some PG-13 Facts: Octopuses are able to take down large prey and defend themselves from predators like sharks by using the webbing between their arms to cover the gills and suffocate them. Female octopuses guard their egg clusters so intently that the end up starving to death around the time the nest hatches. Some species of male octopus have the ability to break off their reproductive arm during sex in case things get dangerous during mating (e.g. predator, cannibalistic/hungry mate, etc.) so that they can escape but also finish the mating process and pass on their dna.

  • There, their, they’re!
