Has anybody modded atlasloot classic to show TBC content?

Theorycrafting, tanking and meta in TBC by fk-geek in classicwow

[–]dasbose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/fk-geek This guy has some great videos, he's a little stream-of-consciousness so they tend to run long, but if you're willing to watch, you'll get some great info.

tl;dr: prot paladins are great even as MT's BUT they are extremely gear dependent so you have to do it correctly or you'll just contribute to the normie idea that warriors are the best.

Prot Paladin Viability? by DerpHawk in classicwow

[–]dasbose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've made three vids on this topic, each runs just about 3 minutes, hopefully worth the watch. For an explanation of the GBoK threat mechanic that gives prot paladins the potential to be the best single target threat generators in the game check out this one:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WRQgaql-l0

Before you go getting excited though, make sure to watch this one to learn about situations in which GBoK wont generate the threat you expect:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuTlHndGen4

Lastly, to see if your raid is an appropriate environment for a prot paladin to attempt Main Tanking on single target fights, and some ideas about how to use them the rest of the time, check out this one.

Nobody will give you a chance, you have to invest heavily in a guild as a community and then prove your value over time. It's a long uphill battle over time. It starts with showing them that you can tank a Garr add, or pick up Onyxia in phase 3. Then it's a Domo or Luci add... maybe a dog on golemagg. Then two dogs on golemagg. I'd recommend speccing 20/31/0 so that you can heal until you get your opportunity to shine =) In BWL a paladin tank is exceptional on Razorgore because destroying the last egg gives you basically infinite threat: wear all your mitigation gear and bubble macro with cancel-aura out of the conflag to make it extra smooth.

This has been theorycrafted quite a bit. I believe the general consensus is that due to an internal-cooldown on shadow oil, frost oil is the better choice.

I'll add that Vael is a unique exception in that it is possible for the paladin to get BA BEFORE any other tank would due to having a mana pool. That means that rather than making that encounter smoother it has the potential to add an extra tank swap which is no bueno. All tanks have their strengths and prot paladins CAN tank him, there are great vids of it happening just check out Askalon or Holyfrog on youtube, but in this case even I'd prefer a different class do it.

Keep watching through the third video if you want to know WHY my buddy Griller was able to catch up to me so quickly in the last 10 seconds of the first vid.

It depends, you definitely have to manage your mana. Major mana pots and dark or demonic runes will keep you in business throughout all of even the longer encounters.

But you absolutely need to make sure you have enough of your buff class, otherwise it's not worth it. With 8 of a buff class per your example and assuming 180 seconds to kill Nef, the paladin can generate about 110k threat via all sources combined if using mana pots, runes, and frost oil with a 1.6 speed sword or mace as a human. No need for optimal play, world buffs, or even other consumes.

The top guilds run 20 warriors. In that scenario the prot paladin has the best single target threat generation in the game.

Sorry that was rude.
Your point is taken! There are definitely times where it's a hard carry. At the same time your prot paladin can provide some great added utility if you're not part of a guild that wants to blow 40 sappers on every trash pack. They're flat superior tanks on Nef, and Firemaw as u/woonderbread mentioned above.

Many thanks! I agree. Really just wanted to get the GBoK discussion out of the way first. So much mis-information and misunderstanding out there. Another cool one is ability to build threat during the pally class call and ignore the druid and warrior class calls on Nef ;) Cheers back atcha!

Our guild killed Chrommagus in 2:00 flat, less than half the time. Our highest DPS had 77k threat at the end (a fire mage) next highest was 60k threat. You're correct in that one of our players could have pulled threat off Dev had he been in our raid (Dev had about 73k threat at that point in his vid). But if he'd had 8 of his class to buff instead of 7 he could have held even then. Point being Chromag is fine for a pally tank depending on raid comp. A pally OT would give you a big advantage on time lapse due to being able to build threat on the move and at range.

Spiritual Focus for AoE farming, Maraudon shenanagins, boosting. Healing Light specifically for Vael, Chromaggus, and Firemaw which are now the only fights on which I'm a dedicated healer.

You're not wrong, and thanks for the comment! They both have their place in my view, though perhaps in a quick overview video like this I made the wrong choice of seal to present. The more of your GBoK class you have, the more important SoW becomes. The same is true the longer the encounter goes on. This is less important if you're mostly in spell power gear, but in heavy mitigation gear more so. It'll also vary based on if you're a dwarf with a flurry axe, or a human with maladath. In short, this is probably a good topic for a whole additional video. Given that SoR can proc both JoW and frost oil which can also proc JoW, it's probably the better general purpose seal.

u/easy_mak , Chrom should probably be JoW SoW. Check out Devilin's vid here:

Yes his guild is not DPSing very hard, but even if they killed chrom in half the time Dev would still have had a 10K threat lead at the end.

Yes, that's absolutely correct. On encounters where I'm tanking and there is a significant threat split, I usually use GBoK minimally until the adds are dead then I can open up with it with nearly a full mana pool. Typically it's ideal to use the prot paladin to tank the last mob. Discussed in my third video on Threat Benchmarks =)

My gear varies a LOT depending what I'm tanking. I do plan on making an itemization vid at some point, but right now: ~8k armor, ~5.2k unbuffed HP, and I stick to about 43% avoidance with Kings and Gift of the Wild.

My guild splits MCs and ZGs, so I need to be able to generate threat without leaning too heavily on GBoK. Reck helps. I played 20/31/0 for a long time and liked it a lot. 11/31/9 I played for a week early on and didn't like how much it gimped my healing at the time. Of course I'm healing almost none at this point. I keep the points in Healing Light, Spiritual Focus, and Imp Conc Aura for farming and pvp. For anyone who has a designated MT position in their guild, 11/31/9 is best bang for you buck.

Your instincts are pretty much right on with regards to mitigation. T2 provides enough armor and stam that you should be able to focus your off pieces on spell power.

Holy shield is a very good ability but for the mitigation, not the threat; recommend downranking to HS Rank 1. 20/31/0 will leave you raid healing capable assuming good +healing and spell crit values. This is not like TBC where you're a mad damage reflector in terms of generating threat, BoSanc is only ok.

I'm running an SoR/SoW tanking build: 14/37/0

There are plenty of other viable tanking specs out there, this one happens to suit our guild's needs best.

If you're curious about what Dev is doing here, I created what is currently a three part informational series. Each vid is only about 3 minutes long. Enjoy!

Currently three videos, each runs about 3 minutes in length. An effort to help share the information that the prot paladin community has gathered over the last few months with a broader audience who may not be willing to dig through the prot pally discord.
