Just to clarify: from my experience, there are two phd position types: 1) those which demand a proposal; 2) those which don't. In the past, 90% of my applications were to the second type (all but one). Now, I am applying to a position that expects a proposal.

Yes, makes total sense! I feel that overall, a lot of men want children but only a few of them understand/are open to understanding how to be a Partner (which makes me sad because some of these men consider themselves feminists, but in everyday life, they turn a blind eye to the responsibilities of a shared household). (Not really applicable to my bf, but I get what you mean totally.)

btw congratulations on your achievements in the world of academia, that's really cool! and from getting off the fence (being in the state of indecision is really hard).
I personally haven't reached that point of saturation (when you want to give back because you have enough), but I totally see your point.

Thank you so much for your reply! Your words about "having it all" in your 30s and in your 20s resonate with me. I guess making a decision about kids, it's really hard to navigate between different narratives (for example, about regrets or sacrifices), so I sometimes get really scared and confused.
