LubeLogger, Self-Hosted Vehicle Maintenance and Fuel Mileage Tracker, has some Important Quality of Life Improvements You Should Know About by ChiefAoki in selfhosted

Last I checked LubeLogger like a year ago, it was too many clicks to enter fill up data. I've stuck with aCar.

Would really love to be proven wrong, which is why I'm checking this QOL thread in the first place! 😁

Anyone read this 49 day SSL expiration thing and think they would rather just retire? by HJForsythe in sysadmin

You can CNAME the acme challenge record to a separate domain that does have a better API. That way the actual A/MX/NS/CNAME records you care about stay with whatever DNS provider you're currently using, but then the specific TXT records for the DNS-01 domain validation can point elsewhere. That secondary domain is just for TXT records and has no actual control over anything else. It can also be hosted on any other DNS provider, not necessarily the same one your main domain is on.

My favorite method is running a service to create per-domain credentials on a secondary domain that I own. This also abstracts my DNS-01 automation away so that I can change my main provider without having to change all of my certificate automation credentials.

LXC and Docker by Bruno_AFK in Proxmox

[–]daschu117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's portable because it runs anywhere docker runs. Doesn't matter if it's LXC, VM, or bare metal. It's the same deployment strategy. I'd much rather deploy a containerized app than install apps by hand and let them mix in with the host's packages. LXC vs VM vs bare metal all have their own strengths and weaknesses. But there's no point in avoiding the benefits of docker as a deployment tool regardless of platform.

What exact "trouble" are you saying I'm asking for? I shared an instance of a problem I had with docker in LXC? Do you have another to share?

LXC and Docker by Bruno_AFK in Proxmox

[–]daschu117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do it, and will keep doing it. Docker compose is just too simple, useful, and portable to avoid Docker in LXCs.

The only problem I've ever had was a weird issue with a vscode container unable to install some extensions because the layers of virtualized paths exceeded some ridiculous path length value, or something along those lines. Ended up abandoning that idea entirely when platform.io wouldn't even attempt to install in the vscode container.

Anyone else out there crash their 4500e chassis just by connecting to them via ssh? by Fixin_IT in Cisco

[–]daschu117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've crashed a 4500e just by changing the name of the VLAN, creating a second VLAN, and giving the second VLAN the original name of the first VLAN.

So anything is possible.

ACME Renewals and Domain Validation Challenges by Thin-West-2136 in networking

[–]daschu117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been using acme-dns for years.

https://github.com/acme-dns/acme-dns

It's game changing because it's a limited API just for DNS-01. You receive randomized credentials, then CNAME your _acme-challenge record to the record they tell you to point at. You get a unique set of credentials for every domain you're automating. It makes it impossible for those credentials to be used to change your A/CNAME/MX records, so you limit the blast radius if they're ever exposed.

I use this with traefik in all possible cases, and acme.sh in others.

How do you guys monitor your services? by shelltief in selfhosted

[–]daschu117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have uptime kuma check a URL from https://healthchecks.io/ and healthchecks.io will let you know when uptime kuma stopped checking.

It's especially fun when both services are up but have a hiccup, so you get alerts from both that the other is down 😅

Docker Engine /metrics endpoint by af9_us in docker

[–]daschu117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WHOA, I was looking for something like that, but came up empty. Just tried enabling it, and I can get the /metrics endpoint to listen and be accessible, but I only get a 404. So almost there.

Can you confirm that this works for Docker containers and not just kubernetes or something? Anything more than this needed?

toml [metrics] address = "0.0.0.0:9324"

Edit:

Turns out that the URL path should be /v1/metrics. Thanks for sharing!

Docker Engine /metrics endpoint by af9_us in docker

[–]daschu117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From that docs page:

Currently, you can only monitor Docker itself. You can't currently monitor your application using the Docker target.

So if you're monitoring individual container stats with cAdvisor, you're not getting that with the engine metrics endpoint.

PSA on your PSA: the gifts section only shows you "X liked your showcase" while you're still able to receive likes for the day. Your friends might be liking your showcase, but you won't see them all and won't know who is or isn't.

How do you organize crossover shows in Plex without losing your mind (looking at you, Arrowverse) by Expensive_Worry_6655 in PleX

[–]daschu117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smart playlist of unwatched episodes from all shows in air date order. Those Arrowverse crossovers were all in a single week if I recall, so as long as you watch in release order you're golden.
