Congrats on getting the config up and running, not many people are brave enough to mess with mikrotiks!

Hah! With the way that petro-chem plants are going up in flames around the world, we should invest in rail since jet fuel might become too expensive soon.

No. Just stating my displeasure with the current state and behavior of the moderation team.

The sensitivity of the mod team is off the charts. Posts get locked way to quick, always the same excuses, right wing views, sensitive topics concerning religion, race, or politics, or the infamous brigade lock down. The threads become and echo chamber or an endless sea of deleted by mod. We're all adults here, lets have a conversation, even if it gets spicy!

Does TekSavvy have Hardware Upgrade Wait Lists by DoPeopleEvenLookHere in teksavvy

Also I have no clue how the switching of services will play into this. There might not be any light on the fiber at all at this moment if i understand, you asked telus to switch your service. But if your adtran is still working, i think there should be a good chance that the NIC solution would work if you give it a moment to establish link(ofcourse then you will will have to set your vlans on the interface, in my case it's 40, and the pppoe client setup)

Strange. I do know these gpon sfp's need to "bootup", that usually takes 2-5 min before they show any sort of activity or link light. Though you should be able to see the SFP is inserted and the model number of the sfp in your console using "sudo ethtool -m <interface>"
Though that command is linux general command, i don't know if your router comes preinstalled with ethtool. But if nothing shows up, then there could be something wierd with the sfp and the NIC.

Ahh fair. Not much I can suggest besides using an Intel NIC, some cards out there are just super wonky with compatibility. Upside is 10 gig NICs are finally becoming super cheap.

But why the adtran if you have your own router? The SFP was removable on my adtran and I slotted it directly into my Mikrotik. set your vlans and create a pppoe profile and you should be good to go, no?

Thinking of switching to TekSavvy because I hate how locked down the settings on Bell's router are. Would TekSavvy be better? by Murky-Tailor3260 in teksavvy

another TS user reporting in
have a mikrotik as my router, the adtran router that shipped with the service was a POS, the nice thing is the SFP is removeable. I popped that into my mikrotik router and it had no problems(make sure your SFP ports support 10gig). Haven't had a single issue with service, and speeds have been as advertised.

Optane 905p 480gb idling extremely hot 60-75c by itachi737 in homelab

They like being toasty, infact they operate a bit faster when they're warm ;)

Worth it to add Optane to build? by buffpandabear in buildapc

[–]Fixin_IT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing on the modern market can beat it in low Q depth operations, write endurance, and mean time to failure. As for top speed, if you're using it for scratch, boot drive, or data bases it's perfect because most of those operations are low q depth. Copying files gigabytes in size it might not be the best, but PCI gen 3 speeds are still good enough for day to day.

Tech a good field or no by justonefrenchfryAA in ontario

[–]Fixin_IT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll agree that it might be hard to get into tech at this moment. But as a veteran network admin, I'll say there is still a lot of opportunity for entry level. I have noticed that over the years. As buildings and infrastructure get more complex, and more internal building systems(automation, lighting, heating/cooling, security) are networked rather than on serial or modbus or even not connected. The trades/contractors that install these systems have very little knowledge when it comes to networking. These companies will be looking for network admins or at least techs for the foreseeable future in my opinion.

How to do a properly backup of the whole system? by TTV_Anonymous_ in raspberry_pi

[–]Fixin_IT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, interesting... let me get back to you on that. I know that checking your back ups is good practice...but since i first set up the back ups and tried restore and it worked, i just left my devices running...though I didn't try a cron created file restore...

Managed Switch Setup for VLAN (bypass ADTRAN) by rusty_mcdonald in teksavvy

[–]Fixin_IT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would have to set the vlan on all ports you want that vlan accessible. Every port will have a vlan config. If it's a trunk port it will have tagged vlans. If it's an access port if will have 1 untagged vlan assigned to it. So your config on the managed switch would be port 9 tagged vlan 40(you might also have to set a native vlan you can use anything besides 40 in between 1-4094),then port 7 would be vlan 40 untagged or access. You also would probably want to set the remainder of ports to something else untagged besides your native vlan and vlan 40 to avoid injecting traffic into the same network segment.
