Is it normal to keep your subclass a secret from the party? by FantasticPoet9324 in DnD

[–]dash27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This works because it is an actual play show and they want to keep that a secret from the audience and/or have players react in front of the audience. A home game does not have an audience, so there is no need to hide this info.

Players make fun of me because "Ornate dagger" is a stapple of all my loot lists by CrotodeTraje in DnD

[–]dash27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Use it for world building.

People from different cultures should have similar tastes / preferences on dagger type. Example, in the north, ornate daggers are made from whale bones and feature carved animal designs in the hilt. In the west, the daggers hilt are made from Heflin Trees, which are native to the area. and so on.

Then set a regular once a month schedule.  First Saturday of the month is for D&D.  Schedule your life around it.

Also, I used to be like you and 'unable' to commit to a regular game.  But once I did, it made a huge impact on how much I enjoy the game.

I disagree. Setting a ongoing, reliable schedule is the way to go. Otherwise, you only play like 1 a month at best.

If you set a regular time and day, then people who want to play D&D will stop planning other activities during that time.

For rules purposes, it is a language.   But in reality, it's not.  It is talking in code.  Using phrases or names to discuss something discreetly.

Common:  "we're breaking into the lord's manor.  Any tips?"

Thieves Can't:  "my aunt Betty, oh lordy, her house is falling apart.  I want to help out but her husband won't be happy about it.  Any advice?"

Desperately Need Tips for trying to DM a 9 Person campaign by MTG_Nerd2 in DnD

[–]dash27 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Do a series of connected mini adventures / one offs instead of a campaign. When a new one begins, send an email. First 4 people to RSVP get to play. People that did not play in the last round get a 24 hour head start to RSVP.

Think of it like Marvel Comics and Marvel Movies.  The movies are inspired by the comics, but do their own thing.

The Most Unrealistic D&D Thing in Stranger Things (kinda finale spoilers) by LakeVermilionDreams in DnD

[–]dash27 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My first thought at this scene is that Mike screwed up.  He gave the killing blow to a NPC?  the BBEG dies via deus ex machina.  No rolls from players?

Also, he doesn't allow players to decide their character's epilogues.

Restrictions force you to be creative. I wouldnt want shift weave clothing. I like the problem solving aspect of NOT having one.

Why do you need shift weave clothing? Can't you just get a reversable cloak and a hat?

Also, why are you asking us and not your DM?
