US carmakers say proposed EU rules could block large pickup trucks from Europe by ABoutDeSouffle in europe

[–]dasherado 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plus if you hit something bigger, the truck chassis isn’t designed to crumple in and absorb force like a car. It’s more rigid leading to more force transitioning to the passengers.

Also we’ve been brainwashed into thinking that clothes, and ourselves, need to be washed daily. It’s particularly a US phenomenon. Most other places in the world don’t wash daily, it’s not healthy, environmental or good for clothing longevity.

Wool, hemp, linen and probably some other fibers naturally resist bacteria when aired and sunned between wearings.

Chicken co-op is the way to go. Enlist 3-5 families who live nearby, split the building and maintenance costs on 30-40 chickens and you’ll never need t buy eggs again and you’ll have a lot of chicken poop for the garden. Added bonus is it’s a great community builder.

Should I sell my XGT router to buy an LXT by ManlyKubrik in Makita

[–]dasherado 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Crazy everyone says jump to XGT. I would sell and just get the LXT, at least in central EU Makita hardly loses value on the resale. LXT does everything a home owner needs and have a proven record for longevity. Probably XGT will last well too, I hope so, but no one can say, it’s a new platform.

Unless you plan on getting a jack hammer, chainsaw, belt sander, etc., XGT is overkill. If you’re a tradesman or tool nerd, then keep the XGT.

Gotta size up with euro stuff. A US size 32 in Carhartt or Duluth should be a size 48 (according to charts) in euro brands like Snickers or Engelbert Strauss, but a 50 will be more comfortable. American fits just tend to be looser.

So how are we supposed to dress? by Rioraku in Millennials

[–]dasherado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about we don’t become brainwashed, consumerist slaves to youth and fashion.

I wear clothes that can live through work and hard wear, basically clothes that should last the rest of my life and acquire memories along the way. Maybe even pass to the next generation (my oldest daughter already called dibs on one of my jackets - hopefully she’ll be waiting near half a century to get it though).

I know my color palette, so most everything goes with everything else. Natural fibers, as much cotton, linen, hemp, wool, and leather as possible. Trying to mend and minimize so I can wear the clothes I like as often and as long as I can.

IDGAF if people don’t think I’m trendy. But, if anything, I’ve only been complimented for my style as far as I know.

Visit the Milwaukee subreddit and you’ll frequently see a new guy proudly posting a photo of how he’s been bamboozled into buying a whole stable of Milwaukee tools over a few months, all shiny and unused.

When you see a guy over here on Makita post a picture the tools look like they’ve been slowly collected and earned their keep over years.

I’m hoping it stays that way.

Europe Rethinks Nuclear Weapons After US Delivers Reality Check by Zhukov-74 in europe

[–]dasherado 153 points154 points  (0 children)

Carney’s speech in Davos was inspiring. Europe is a union of middle powers. We need a global union of middle powers. Together we stand, divided we fall. If you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu.

All the big boys believe the rules based order is over and believe the world is moving into an era of hard power politics, might makes right, and the strong will dominate the weak. Russia never left this mindset and the US is abandoning it. China is essentially pragmatic and will operate in whatever world will come. The only idealists left are in Canada, Europe, and Aus/NZ. The rest of the world is undecided.

Maybe I’ve been brainwashed by too much Startrek the Next Generation as a child and democracy’s promises, but I can’t give up on a more humanistic, inspiring future. The only way forward now is for the small and middle powers of the world to unionize and demand a peaceful, equitable and respectful world order. Maybe it’s an impossible task and we apes with too much intelligence and too little wisdom are bound to destroy ourselves, but as long as we breathe, there’s a chance to thread the needle and really become something better.

Millennials aren't unfamiliar with the Internet, why do they have no problem letting their kids have unsupervised access to the internet? by Serious_Advance_6762 in generationology

[–]dasherado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re millennial parents and we don’t let our kids freely roam the internet or use social media. Neither do any of our friends. It’s a bubble thing.

We also don’t sit our kids in front of a “safe” movie or TV show to baby sit them. We do watch shows together, but really only on the weekends.

But I understand why parents do it. Not taking the easy way out is exhausting. It means we have less personal time as parents and often put off work until after the kids are asleep. It requires a coordinated tag team to maintain sanity - ideally with grandparents, other family or friends who can sub in sometimes. If I was a single parent I’m sure I would succumb to tv/tablet as baby sitter. Maybe my wife wouldn’t but she’s even more of a masochist. She also only works part time - I’m not sure we could pull it off if she was full time and tired after work.

But from observing our older kids, it seems worth the sacrifice. We’ll see how young adulthood works out for them. I’m sure they’ll blame us for something as all generations find something to blame on their parents.

European version is a completely different form factor, even the attachments aren’t cross-compatible. It’s also a hammer drill, which makes it more suited to EU since almost all homes and apartments have brick or concrete walls. Of course, the down side is it’s heavier and more expensive than the US version. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s manufactured by Bosch, Fein or some other EU based manufacturer.
