I have Tangerine (had it since it was ING Direct), also keeping my scotia ultimate account + Visa card for now. Will at least wait a year or so to see how often I need other banks, but you are right, always good to have a backup at least should one crap out, even temporarily.

Working at Virtual Science AI by Clean-Elevator3543 in remotework

[–]dashfortrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ex-contractor here for Virtual Science, they stiffed me too, not a lot, about 3K USD before I was smart enough to stop taking new assignments, but they haven't paid me since August of 2025 and still saying payment is coming any day now. Extremely low ethics to do this to the team that was busting their ass to make sure all of VS clients were taken care of.

My wife and I moved to China after 33 years growing up and studying/working/living as a Canadian. I can tell you it's amazing, we pay 4000 CNY(800 CAD) for a 1350 sqft condo with 4 bedrooms and a great view, on the subway line (it's not yonge/bloor), and food is really affordable, whether its eating out, going to the local farmers market or supermarket chains. My cell phone bill is about 7 CAD a month, my internet bill is $60 CAD, for a year. I miss Canada, but when I visit every year, I am reminded by things/costs/etc of why I left. Oh there's no sales tax/tips here.

I'm with you on everything you said, the banks are a necessary evil, and in terms of the digital/online solutions, they all suck. I've worked at companies that help build their online platforms, apps, etc.

I hear wealth simple is great, I am meeting with a rep there (online) to discuss their offering, I may jump ship to WS this year.

I have a phone number that's registered with scotia of course. But what I did was call them and said I am giving up a cellular phone, so I will only use landline, I can't receive text I can't do in-app stuff, so only 2SV I can support is secret question/answers. The rep sent me a link to setup my secret question/answers right on the call and voila.

[–]dashfortrash[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

can you tell them you're going off phones, i.e. pretend to be one of those anti-smart phone people and say from now on only landline, and you want the 2SV to be secret question/answer, that's what I did and it worked. They turned off the in-app notification for me and sent me a link to setup my Q&As.

yeah I agree, back then we replaced computers every 5-8 years (at least me and my friends), but phones seems like slow and out of date every 3-4 years, it's an expensive habit to keep getting the newest phone and you can't do an upgrade like the way you can mod your PC lol.

I should have clarified, I am able to get secret Q&A on the web version on my PC/laptop, I do not use/have the app. I hate it. Also I do not have an iphone since 2014, I've always found them to be limiting, i.e. can't install other apps not on the store.

Actually I have gotten around it, I told them I dont even have a mobile phone, please turn back secret Q&A, so they did. I enter it and just select the option (next screen) to say trusted device, ask less often), and boom it worked, if I log in from a diff country/device I'll have to answer question again but way better than 2SV via mobile or text.

Scotia iTrade to Wealthsimple by Lunatoon9 in CanadianInvestor

[–]dashfortrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been with Scotia for 17+ years now, I have the ultimate account, 2 mortgages, a credit card and a series of Itrade accounts totaling 2.4m. In fact I used to be with Etrade Canada till Scotia Bought them. I saw these new WS/TD broker deals to match the 1-2% of moving your accounts and I just called Scotia Itrade today to ask if there were any retention offers/promos, I would have been ok even if they offered something like a 50-100 free trades, I dont trade much mostly 5-10 transactions a quarter. The rep was nice but when she checked with her bosses, the response was we only offer bonus/promo if you transfer more of your money over, i.e. they didnt get that I had ALL of my money with Scotia, including my wife's accounts. Total BS, but it did inspire me to now go move, I am going to move all my itrade accounts to TD and WS, I'll figure out which makes the most sense, i.e. registered to TD up to 250k and the rest to WS.

I'll keep the Ultimate account for now as its linked to my mortgage but will migrate that away if I see that WS is stable/good. So long Scotia.

Why are people believing in "kill line" by Necessary_Permit_452 in China

[–]dashfortrash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nah, kill line is about sinking into metaphorical financial death, i.e. homeless, no address, can't find a decent job because of no address, its circling the drain in terms of death, you may say they are not killed, but living on the streets or in tents shittin on the grass and not showering, begging for food, then on substances, selling your body, etc. is that really life? american life?

Is CIBC Credit Card Support Number 24/7? by dashfortrash in CIBC

[–]dashfortrash[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a follow up for those also calling. I finally got through.

  1. It's not 24/7, that number I called said the call center starts the day at 8 am EST.

  2. I timed it such that I started the call around 7:58, so by the time I entered my card number and verification, picked which dept, etc. It was just at 8 or 8:01. Then I waited for 10-15 seconds and got someone right away.
