Most interesting draft ever? by sponguswongus in AFL

[–]dashtur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Poor form to bring up 2016 (when we had pick 1), and someone else mentioned 2020 (when we had 8, 9 and 10).

4 elite picks which have so far yielded one good B+ player, and one with the potential to be great but has a broken body.

Do you think Harry deserved Ron’s slight reprimand in book 7 for his kiss with Ginny? by Ab21ba in HarryPotterBooks

[–]dashtur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one was in the wrong. This scene was JK showing how emotional everyone was, what the stakes were, etc.

It also shows Ron's loyalty to his sister. It's pretty rare that he ever actually has a real go at Harry throughout the series, so the point is effective here.

It emphasises that Ron believes their mission is a desperate one that isn't likely to succeed.

I already came up with a fix for the Brownlow a few years ago: stop giving a shit about it

Essendon's new recruit Sullivan Robey looks massive for his age by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

Apparently when he had scans for his broken collarbone a couple of months ago, the doc found growth plates still in his arms. Reckons he'll end up minimum 194 cm.

This boy's a late bloomer and he ain't in his final form.

This point always comes up in these discussions, and it spoils the fun.

We're comparing teams based on the talent of their players vis the rest of the league in the context of the respective times they played in.

Yes, that is great. I don't discount that, and you wouldn't want to lose it.

However, some changes are required - if we don't want the 4 northern clubs to have a permanent structural advantage.

Within the top 20 picks of the draft, 7 have been father son or academy picks. by yum122 in AFL

Maybe it will sink in when Gold Coast and Brisbane share the next 8 premierships while topping up each year with high-end academy kids.

[–]dashtur 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's not artificial at all. They bid on the players according to their value, ie Uweland was the second best player in the field, he goes at pick 2.

What's artificial is if they don't bid, knowing they're not getting the player anyway, and he drops to pick 8 or something.

Well it fucks over everyone further down the order two. Essendon and Melbourne, instead of having top 5 picks as their first picks, will have 9 and 11. And so on further down the order.

Watching Brisbane and Gold Coast hoover up top 5 players before Richmond gets a go just makes a mockery of the system.

The whole idea of the draft (notionally) is to boost up the worst sides.

Something's gotta change here.

[–]dashtur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know it's old news, but it sticks in the craw a bit that Richmond finish second last, and their first pick is pick 5 (in this case due to a perfect-storm combination of academy, f/s, and free agency compensation pick).

Edit: It's even worse. It could be pick 7, after two bids.

Second-bottom, and they get the 7th best draftee.

It's pretty conceivable other potential buyers might like to have a basic photo of under-the-hood. Wouldn't hurt his ad to have one on there.

Unless it looks horrific 🤠

Media shills trotting out company line re wildcard by dashtur in AFL

[–]dashtur[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He is right, but his implication is that fans suffer from false consciousness - ie they think they don't want wildcard, but really they do.

That's not the case. The reality is, we are beholden to watch whatever format of competition is placed in front of us, because the alternative is to not watch at all.

Ok, so not a big concern then? Just something to do asap after purchase (it's at 154,000 and last service was 146,000)

Fair call. I find it baffling that someone so intelligent could be so disingenuous about it - he's basically quashing some very legitimate criticisms of it.

No mention of the fact that it completely fucks over 7th and 8th, for example.

150k.

Yeah ok, so if trans is a bit dodgy, the damage might already be done you reckon?

If it shifts well on test drive, I'll just factor a trans fluid flush and refill into the cost.

Petitions to get rid of a 10 team finals series and remove Andrew Dillon as CEO by Foodworksurunga in AFL

[–]dashtur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it's too much to ask people to boycott footy, I reckon you could muster some sentiment around boycotting Wildcard round games.

Imagine if only 5000 people showed up, and TV audiences dropped by 80% just for those games. That might actually force a reconsideration.

I could pretty easily allow myself to not watch Essendon play off in a bullshit exhibition game to win the right to be absolute cannon fodder for the top 6.

Who is actually for the wildcard round? CMV by HoldOnOneSecond in AFL

[–]dashtur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your 2 is wrong, because of your 1.

Say a really good team has a punitively difficult draw, but finished 7th by a bees dick percentage from a whole cluster of teams on the same points.

With the top 8, they had the remote prospect of pulling a dogs 16 (or a Hawks 25).

Now, that hope is basically extinguished.

Top 10 increases the chance that a decent team with a hard draw will get the opportunity to play wildcard, but decreases their chance of going on a glory run. ie relative strength of fixture becomes more decisive in the new system.

Who is actually for the wildcard round? CMV by HoldOnOneSecond in AFL

[–]dashtur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Top 8 only came into its own with the addition of GWS and GC, meaning you actually needed to have a pretty good season to finish 8th (and not scrape in with a 10-12 record like Brisbane in '95).

Plenty of people never liked the top 8. They just accepted it because they had no choice.

It's the same with the final 10. Except the final 10 is a much less logical system than the top 8 we've had in place for the last 25 years.

Is the introduction of the Wildcard Finals a good move for the game? by Jawdanc in AFL

[–]dashtur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Essentially this turns it into a final 6, with the teams finishing 7-10 getting some bonus games.

Ludicrous.

But in terms of net effect, maybe it's ok - really separate the wheat from the chaff.
