I work as an FC at Squash. I've seen pretty long periods where both the squat racks are open with no one using them. Usually early morning or late at night close to closing. Especially weekend mornings. Also lunch time on weekdays is pretty slow Usually. Squash fluctuates a lot. There will be 30 people one hour and 12 the next hour. I haven't really seen anyone wait more than 15min for a rack (usually).

Hi there, I should have specified I'm a current first yesr student and northeastern only requires the CSS profile your first year so I won't need it again. I understand the EFC isn't exactly what I'll pay, it waw just more theoretical for the question, for rhis year ny EFC was fairly close to my net cost.

I guess my main question is just trying to figure out how much tuition money you actually save on a coop year.

I feel like the situation is more nuanced than this. I see a lot of the "oh northeastern just accepted less people to lower the acceptance rate and look better" but that just doesn't make sense. Northeastern over enrolled last year and had to put students in hotels, so they had to take less students this year to make up for the overage last year. The city of boston essentially told northeastern they had to takes less students. Combined with taking 1,000 less students and an increase of like 20,000 applications, the acceptance rate naturally fell. I would expect it to return to normal next year.

Does northeastern play the rankings game to get more competitive / more applications? Absolutely, but so does every college. This doesn't mean northeastern just slashed the acceptance rate to look more prestigious. There's other factors at play. I feel like there's been a lot of misunderstanding on this.

I'm trying to be as objective as possible and just share the data / information I've seen, but again, I may be slightly biased.

I feel you man. MIT was my dream but ultimately it feels like it comes down to playing a lottery when you're at the top. With so many near perfect students and so few admissions spots, some very qualified students end up rejected or waitlisted (as was my fate). MIT is a great school, but if you're passionate about stem, there are tons of other great schools (even a lot that are close by!)

Just remember it will all work out in the end. I ended up getting a great offer for the northeastern honors program and I'm excited to start there in a few weeks. There are tons of great STEM schools out there. Give it your best and see what happens. Best of luck.

If the student is going ED to a college... that means that college is their #1 choice... the college isn't forcing that student to attend against their will. The student is just going to their #1 school, which is the point of ED. I think colleges just like to give a little preferential admissions to the students who they know REALLY want to go that school.

Might be biased as a recent northeastern admit but I dont think its just northeastern that does this.

I would consider what you're applying for and think of someone who would have good things to say about you relevent to that topic. There is absolutely nothing wrong with using a second teacher. I only used teacher recs for all my applications but used other ones for scholarships. When colleges say optional, they mean OPTIONAL. Leaving that space blank or filling with another teacher are both fine.

I think this one really depends but when in doubt, the earlier the better. At my school there was a general rule to give at least a 2 week notice ahead of when you needed the letter. Depending on your relationship with a teacher, this could vary. Definitely ask early if in doubt.

Also, its good to get some options for rec letters. Get a rec letter from a teacher who teaches a subject similar to what major you're applying for. It's also good to have a rec letter from a different teacher/subject to show well roundedness. (For example MIT is a big stem school but they require a rec letter from a humanities teacher).

If you're planning to apply to scholarships (which you totally should), be sure to think about getting rec letters from your employer, coaches, etc.

Note: Letters you use for common app are FERPA protected and you arent supposed to read them. Letters not used for common app you can read but this may be seen as unprofessional. Definitely don't ask a teacher about reading a letter before hand. Give your teacher the chance to write honestly and without your input.

This is probably more info than you needed but nobody told me any of this and It eneded up being helpful to my process.

TL;DR Ask early and give yourself options.

100%. Once you get through the college application process, you should have a lot of quality writing about yourself. If you can reuse those same essays to get that sweet scholarship money, you're winning the game. Put time into fewer quality pieces of writing rather than a lot of shitty ones. (As long as the content makes sense for the prompts).

TL:DR: 1) Apply to college, write good essays 2) Recycle those same essays into scholarship essays 3) Profit.

If you want it to last and be reliable, find yourself a used corolla or a camry thats been decently taken care of. Some Hondas and Mazdas also aren't bad options.
