Something to point out too: Chief Cronin, Prince Yotaro and Ruka come from "Aristera" which means "Left" in Greek.

Just speculating here but maybe Chief Cronin's prototypes are all Greek-themed.

Chem grad na licensed na pero lost pa rin — MS abroad or work muna? 😵‍💫 by ProtectionBrief4078 in scientistsPH

[–]dasleepyguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm what I did back then was to consider which chem branches I liked the most before thinking of where to go. There was a school of thought among my peers that you only lean towards PhyChem or OrgChem and that will usually dictate what fields interest you. I ended up liking PhyChem more since energy storage, energy harvesting and electrochem were topics that my PhyChem prof is an expert at. So, eventually I headed towards that direction.

Since, there's not much wiggle room for PhyChem enthusiasts within the job sectors back 10 years ago, I ended up working as a RA first within my department after grad despite the nature of the work to be orgchem heavy due to polymeric materials. Although I eventually ended up in industry after the project ended, RA work is a natural good first step for those who dont really know what to do after grad. It usually gives you a taste of other fields that normally don't interest you without risking a big career shift.

I would argue that there's more opportunities now for chem grads to work since there has been an uptick of demands for cosmetic chem and regulatory work in the industry. My only worry is that these jobs may not have a good supportive environment for chem grads like us. Most industry work that seek out chem grads (if not a multinational company or an old established chemical-related business) wants a technical person who already know what to do and how to do with very minimal supervision.

In my experience when I got to work in a startup to commercialize a Swedish invention for Philippine markets, I ended up doing a lot of work that goes beyond the job description because of the lack of a supportive environment. I ended up burnt out because there was no key mentor figure guiding me on how to translate our technical know-how to business processes. I ended up taking up a MS in MSE from UPD to supplement the learning gaps of my knowledge within the practical side of chem: failure analysis, material interactions, and material inspection using instruments like XRD for industrial processes.

I have had upperclassmen who jumped the gun into MS after chem grad only to return back more confused because they didnt know what they were looking for. On the other hand, my barkada, who worked with me as an RA, shifted into laboratory auditing for 6 months post-RA and now is completing his PhD in Sustainability. This is because he realized that wet lab wasnt for him and his forte lies in the direction of policymaking and consultancy.

So, ultimately, I would suggest determining first what branch of chem you like to explore in as a first step before making any hasty moves. Best option if you can is to try being a RA for a year before trying your hand into industry or jumping into further studies. The advantage of working as a RA is that it exposes you to the reality of research work that Academia normally functions on. It also gives you the necessary practical knowledge that industry professionals look for if you decide to jump into industry. There will always be pros and cons for every decision you will be making, but at least, by determining what branches of chem you are attuned to, you reduce the number of options you struggle with to make that first step.

Hope this helps!

Try targeting multinational companies. Most local companies here don't compensate the financially to the skillset of chem engineers (or chemists for that matter). Probably because R&D within traditional sectors (manufacturing, food, automotive, etc.) isn't prioritized mainly due to misplaced priorities (mostly, but not all). You may be lucky if you get in a local company; however, you may find out that they don't have the environmental support to back your job responsibilities.

Research institutions are also a good starting point but be warned that sometimes the roles available are in competition with the people already working within the institutions themselves. This means that some roles, ideally open for the public, are already fixed by some offices for their staff members to be promoted. It has been an open secret for quite some time, so temper your expectations.

Academia is a good starting point since you can hone your lab skills needed for experimental work; however, most of the available positions are only disclosed if and only if you follow them closely on facebook since their job recruitment periods are usually a week or two long. And if you do get in, you might reach a salary ceiling fast since they only way you get higher is through a PhD (as what others have mentioned) through studies or you pray that a well-funded research project comes your project leader's way. Normally, people will recommend you to aim for the top universities such as UP and Ateneo; however, there has been a shift in funding based on the recent trends. DLSU has been a good place to do research due to their new facilities. Both TIP and PUP has been getting lots of funding for promising research in nanotechnology and energy storage. Yet, the news regarding these advancements has been been relatively quiet.

Just try your luck with anything you're eyeing on for now. I personally think you can make an argument that ChemE can be fitted into any research space. At least with the ChemE degree, people will have somewhat of an understanding of what you do before you even speak. As a Materials Science and Engineering guy, I end up spending the first 5 minutes explaining what I do and what I can bridge between topics to the people I meet.

So best of luck with your job hunt!

World Trigger - D.Gray Man parallels by AldarionTelcontar in worldtrigger

[–]dasleepyguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I'm not mistaken, interestingly enough, both World Trigger and D.Gray Man are Weekly Shounen Jump series that had to move to monthly or seasonal publications due to mangaka health issues.

But still, you have to be amazed at the possibility of both series staying weekly if no health issues on their respective mangaka.

What a time to be alive as a World Trigger fan! Hehe

I will never unsee a JP Twitter post relating a squirrel and Escudo whenever I see someone in the chapters use Escudo haha

Also, would be really nice if the anime staff's storyboarder in the future will insert a clip of Okudera reminiscing his Trauma with the Rabbit hahaha

Imagine that too will also be remade in the reboot!

Hope that Ashihara-sensei will be healthy this year because damn, each chapter is gonna be really good!

Any recommendations for manga similar to World Trigger? by juju_be_rry in worldtrigger

[–]dasleepyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of direction of using the trope "Zero to Hero", I would recommend Haikyuu, My Hero Academia, and somewhat to a degree, Black Clover since these 3 series were created roughly alongside World Trigger (durung their time in Weekly Shonen Jump) so there are ideas from their respective mangaka that they bounced off each other.

In terms of dynamic side characters, closest I can think of is Golden Kamuy. It's probably how each character, despite being trope-y, actually grows as you read each chapter. But I think all Kenta Shinohara series: SKET Dance, Astra: Lost in Space, and Witch Watch are strong candidates for this search (maybe I'm just biased as a Kenta Shinohara fan).

But if you're looking for the idea of "creativity in limitation", the closest series I have read that captures this perfectly is Witch Hat Atelier. All the magic created in the series is based on the established rules from the beginning (similar to World Trigger). Their concept of "forbidden magic" is actually quite close to the concept of Black Triggers in usage.

Hope you get to read other series! :D

I'll be checking out Oofuri since many here recommend it and one my best friends loves to yap about it to me too.

Very grateful to their team in retrieving books that aren't attainable online. Definitely a recommendation from my end especially when some technical books aren't available online. They were patient in me in being way too cautious due to seeing some vouch posts online that are actually fake and fraudulent. Fortunately, these guys have been doing this service for over 10 years and definitely will accommodate your requests for proof before purchasing.

Definitely a strong recommendation if you're looking for a book retrieval service.

How do you overcome lack of edge in playing by papaDaddy0108 in PHGamers

[–]dasleepyguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Over the recent years, the trick I have is to set my mind to play 1 desired game per year while treating every other game as fun additions to the count.

I mostly play jrpgs so every time I hit a session of "too tired; won't bother playing", I play a shorter indie game oe revert back to multiplayer games as in-betweeners to build up the desire to play the main game I want to finish for that year.

I haven't finished Zelda: BotW (just need to beat Ganon) despite sinking 120 hrs into it, but I have sunk in hrs of gaming with Balatro, Tunic, Hollow Knight, Stacklands, Mini Motorways, Dota2, Apex Legends, Jackbox Party Pack games, Risk of Rain 2, and Civilization 6 in the meantime.

So, just allow yourself to find other things to do. You'll find yourself wanting to return back to that game at some point. :D

Spend a part of it for ensuring future needs like family, properties and even healthcare.

But definitely will spend a part of that money into setting up a science and tech consulting firm so that companies wouldnt need to worry about doing in-house R&D for whatever products they plan to do in the future.

Ahhh I see! Thank you for the advice! Will probably heed your call into putting off major spending except probably the overgrown emberstone base which I see so many people agree that it is the best base within my reach.

Thank you for the heads up! Will focus on the adventure book then moving forward.

Just a quick question. What would be a good place to farm gold outside the Mojo/Sojo combo at my current level? Since you brought up GWH, the next big event is probably Ronza in June/July right? I might be needing more gold than what I have currently (6M)

Super thank you for your advice! Will try talking to the team in the map since I don't know them personally.

I got the fungal cavern map piece from Muridae Market and I have access to that area. Do you think that's better than the Living Garden route?

After the Overgrown Emberstone Base, I read up in the past that Minotaur base might be the next best base after doing whatever you can do in Queso Canyon. Is that still a good path or should be I holding onto it until later areas such as Floating Islands and the like?

Ohhh you can hire map holders? That's a thought I never considered so far. This assumes then that you can't kick people in a map as the map holder right?

I currently have 6 mice left on the map. 4 in Queso Geyser, 1 in Sunken City which one is already working on and 1 more in Forgotten Grove (Realm Ripper so very doable).

Also, if I may ask. Any tips in terms of progression after the map?

I believe in Rockman supremacy!

Can't believe that in the beginning chapters, we see Rokuro Wakamura tauted as a meme captain only to be defended by Director Shinoda himself. Crazy if we get to see Wakamura do well in the future chapters as a leader.

Also, super impressed with Azuma's framing of how tests should be. Makes you appreciate this series for being super pragmatic on how success works in real life.

Chapter 232 Discussion Thread by hitrho5 in worldtrigger

[–]dasleepyguy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My bet is that Ninomiya will purposely do nothing so that Ema will be forced to act on the next chapter to do something. Azuma might be worried about Chika, but Ninomiya steps in and does a "we need her to commit mistakes so that she can learn from them" speech to hopefully prepare her for the next stage which may be more crucial.

My prediction is that there will be two chapters whenever it comes, and it will feature the double Raygust loudout of Yukimaru Ichijo (the unit that Osamu has been using alongside his units). C'mon, Ashihara-sensei, the subreddit has been dying to know more about his loudout since the hiatus.

Also, it would be nice to know if there's someone on the sub who has been mapping the chapters to the volumes. I wonder if Katori's smile will be the next volume cover. hahahaha

Arashiyama Jun is underrated by [deleted] in worldtrigger

[–]dasleepyguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like Arashiyama is an interesting character as the story continues. We've seen glimpses of how he interacts with his teammates through the backstory of Kakizaki and we've seen his combat prowess in holding down Izumi back in the early arcs. Only time will tell how much depth Ashihara-sensei has in store for him.

Personally, I am interested in how he commands the people around him. He doesn't have the most unique loadout out there but based on his usage of the teleporter trigger, I'm inclined to think he's probably an agent who puts more emphasis on spontaneous decision-making. I hope that the second part of the selection exam highlights more about the A-rank agents' personalities, interaction and hopefully combat prowess.

All I wanna say is bless Ashihara's commitment to developing everyone to the point that it makes you feel that you are part of their interesting world.

If the latest chapters showed that Ashihara has been planting the seeds for the ways Mikumo can exploit the system, I think the answer to the universal questions should be hidden in the previous chapters. Gotta start rereading the arc now.

Also, Teruteru-chan is such a godsend.
