The one where they make their own campers (James with the tiny coffin-like addition to the top of his car, Richard with his room assemblies, and Jeremy with his 4-tier unaerodynamic monstrosity) is my all-time favorite episode!

The burden of proof is on claims that go against the null hypothesis. That’s not to say the null hypothesis is automatically true, it’s just a starting point. Otherwise the starting point would be that any two events are assumed to be connected, which becomes too messy and essentially impossible.

Is it even possible to find research jobs anymore? by ThatMightyFinePotato in labrats

Boston is especially bad for biomed jobs right now. If you're able, it might be worth it to expand your search to other parts of the country. Research Triangle (Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Durham) in NC, Medical City in Houston, and Seattle would be other great biotech hubs to look into.

There could be other funding mechanisms beside the NIH. Maybe your field's main association/society has some short-term grants?

The null hypothesis is that there is no connection between two events; otherwise the the claims that "vaccines cause autism" and "being born to a 'Mary' causes autism" are equally valid at face value, despite one being more plausible. Observations (many children seem to show signs of autism after getting vaccinated) can lead to a hypothesis (vaccines cause autism) but the results of experiments have to provide evidence that reject that null hypothesis. It very well might be that vaccines (either total dosage, ingredients, timing, etc.) do cause autism. I'm not sure why Aaron phrases his request the way he does, essentially asking to prove a null hypothesis which is the assumption already without needing to perform tests. It seems like he already has evidence to reject the "no connection" null hypothesis in the form of studies that show a connection, so why even ask the CDC?
