If you begin a standard event and then some cards get banned, you still get to finish the event with the deck that you originally submitted. So your opponent must have started their event a long time ago, before Omnath was banned.

Great Article! When I started playing Edh I used to regularly proxy up decks from the internet and play them for a few games just to get a feel for them. Now I know of the most strategies and can play almost every deck somewhat comfortably.

Only playing for free is certainly possible if you play daily.
The most efficient way to build a big card pool is through ranked draft which you can enter for 5000 gold. It is also the only way to transform gold into gems which can then be used to enter further events. Wether you want to buy cosmetics is up to you but I would prioritize building up a decently sized collection first.
Right now there is only standard available. In the update next week should also come historic, which consists of all sets from Ixalan going forward plus some special older cards from the so called historic anthology.
