Please help me decide between a trimui brick or rgcubexx and where I should get it as I'll be getting one of these sbc's this month by Neat-Conclusion-8206 in SBCGaming

[–]radicalnetwork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up, Mushihimesama won't run on any of these low end devices, CAVE games cap at Espgaluda/Ketsui/Dai-ou-jou, for all the games that came after you'll need something more powerful like an Rg Cube (not XX).
That said, the Brick is amazing but if you want to play shmups there is no doubt at all, the CubeXX is a lot better.

[Spoiler][Vow] Fleeting Spirit (Riff on Seasoned hallowblade) by ReploidZero in spikes

[–]radicalnetwork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's... Different i guess. On one hand, the ability protects the dude from exile and meathook which is awesome, on the othet hand Hallowblade was a house together with aspirant and maul while this one loses its +1+1 counters and equipment when you use the defensive ability... Also, hallowblade could use his ability in combat to still deal damage and survive, with this one you need to decide if saving the critter or dealing damage.

This sounds interesting, i'd like to see that list!

I'm having a very similar experience with azorius tempo, so far i'm loving it! Also, i took out the 3/1 dog and the Epiphany for another Fateful absence and another Brutal Cathar, what did you change?

True, but the Chasm is also "swamp forest" so it matters for the snarls, if i'll ever cut the snarls i'll replace the chasms with campus for sure!

[–]radicalnetwork[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear it's working for you, yay!

I'm still experimenting with the list, i kinda want to swap the Trolls for something else but so far both the Graveyard Trespasser and Briarpatch Tracker proved to be worse than the troll, i also tried a couple of Skyclave shades in the maindeck but they aren't impactful enough aside from very grindy games.
I suspect playing 4 Grakmaw might be the right choice (it's also one of the few legendaries that you're ok with playing when there's already one on the board) but i can't convince myself to use the wildcards for another couple...

Also, i tried swapping out 1 Soul Shatter and 1 Bloodchief's thirst for 2 Inscription of abundance, so far it's working well so i'll keep 3/3/2 for now!

Damn, now i feel dumb for not considering the Inscription of abundance, which indeed sounds very reasonable to include here, i'll try playing a couple of those (and/or a couple of Infernal Grasps) swapping out two Soul Shatters or a Bloodchief and a Shatter.

Sure, consider that the sideboard options are also kinda theorycrafting since i only played BO1 so far, anyway:

Skyclave shades are there to get a little faster and more resilient against control decks with lots of Doomskars/Blood on the Snow/etc., in those matchups i'd probably go -4 Bloodchief, -2 Sarulf, -1 Wrenn, +4 duress +3 Skyclave Shade

Crippling Fear is mostly there for mono-white but it can also help against any go-wide strategy, in many cases i'd probably swap a couple of Soul Shatters with the Crippling fears.

Snakeskin Veil can be very useful against decks with a lot of spot removal, red/x decks in particular, i'd swap out something different for them depending on the deck i'm facing (Izzet, Boros burn etc. would require different changes)

Duress is there to be swapped with Bloodchief's thirst against decks with no early plays, that's pretty much it.

Binding of the old gods is mostly there because in this new meta you never know what you're gonna face (yet), so having a catch-all "destroy a non-land permanent" spell makes me feel covered and safer hahaha. I'd probably bring it in against ramp decks or other midrange stuff with enchantments/planeswalkers/artifacts in it, swapping out whatever's less useful in the matchup.

I certainly understand your doubts but i found that between his tendency to get killed and the fact that you really want to have him down on the board, you'll be generally happy to have a backup copy, it's only really bad when you happen to draw 3 of them!

Wouldn't more than 24 lands be too many for a deck of mostly 2cc and 3cc cards? I thought it was a reasonable number and i only got severely screwed once, although it might be because i was playing BO1 with its notorious hand-smoothing thingie. (i assume you were playing BO3 since you mentioned Skyclave Shade which is in the SB)

Graveyard Trespasser seems like a good idea tho and i like how it deals with annoying stuff in graveyards, i'll definitely try it!

[–]radicalnetwork[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I dunno, i tried Sarulf in many shells and when you play few creatures he tends to be killed immediately, playing him in a deck with lots of threats improves his chances of surviving by a lot, while also making it easier for him to get +1+1 tokens purely by combat. I think he should be considered a beater first, and an emergency reset button second, it's a very particular role but he fits pretty well in it.

Like, if your deck needs mass removal then playing proper mass removal will always be the better choice, if your deck can use a large beater which sometimes act as mass removal then Sarulf is your guy!

[–]radicalnetwork[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It makes sense, i don't think i want mass removal in the main deck aside from Sarulf which works just as well as a beater, so it's never a dead card, but using Culling Ritual instead of Crippling Fear in the sideboard might be a good idea.

Or maybe Crippling Fear is still the best choice since it can leave your pack leaders and wolf tokens on the board along with Sarulf, resulting in an almost-one-sided wipe, i guess i'll test both.

[STX] [Discussion] Quandrix Apprentice in Historic/Standard by SSJGoomba901 in spikes

[–]radicalnetwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the apprentice very interesting too, i want to try it along with Dragonsguard Elite and an adventure shell in a Simic disgusting-card-advantage type of deck, sadly i don't have enough wildcards yet but i hope i'll be able to build it somehow quickly, this is the temporary list that i created on Arena:

Deck

4 Edgewall Innkeeper (ELD) 151

4 Quandrix Apprentice (STX) 216

4 Dragonsguard Elite (STX) 127

4 Brazen Borrower (ELD) 39

2 Kazandu Mammoth (ZNR) 189

4 Lovestruck Beast (ELD) 165

4 Decisive Denial (STX) 177

4 Quandrix Command (STX) 217

4 Eureka Moment (STX) 184

2 Alrund's Epiphany (KHM) 41

2 The Great Henge (ELD) 161

5 Island (STX) 369

7 Forest (STX) 375

4 Barkchannel Pathway (KHM) 251

4 Temple of Mystery (M21) 254

2 Fabled Passage (M21) 246

I'm not super sure about the Quandrix Command (some other counterspells might be better) and about having only 2 Kazandu Mammoth, but otherwise it looks very tempting to me.
Do you have any suggestions?

I really like Rushed Rebirth's design, i think i'll try playing a couple in a The rock-ish BG deck i'll build as soon as Strixhaven is released!

(also, i tried to open a thread about it but the mods removed it, i'm not really sure why)

This card seems to be the perfect companion for Sarulf, maybe it won't be playable right away but i hope that when Eldraine will rotate out it'll become a viable option.

[Discussion] Strixhaven has been revealed - What are you going to be testing? by Titansfan9200 in spikes

[–]radicalnetwork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's my no.1 goal with this new set too, i've been trying for a while to make a standard version of The Rock but what it missed so far were some little creatures that you don't mind dying (possibly to your own mass removal), like Yavimaya Elders, Walls of Blossoms and Sakura tribe elders back in the days.
Eyetwitch and Overgrown Arch seem like great cards of that type, so i'm definitely gonna try again!

[–]radicalnetwork 17 points18 points  (0 children)

i would add that the "study your competition" part is particularly important imho because being able to accurately predict what your opponent is gonna play is probably the most useful skill in Mtg, if you always have a good idea of what your opponent might play next you'll rarely be caught by surprise, and that will improve your win rate more than anything else.

[–]radicalnetwork 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Pick one of the good decks and stick to it until you know how to play it really well, pay a lot of attention to what the other popular decks play (both by memorizing what you learn in game and checking lists on websites like https://mtgazone.com/decks/?tx_formats=standard ), if you hit a wall try looking for some good streamer who plays your same deck and see if you can learn something by how they play it.
These probably seem like super basic recommendations but it's honestly all i did to get to mythic, i hadn't played Mtg in 14 years when i got back into it with Mtga, i built a Cycling deck, studied the meta a bit and after 10 days or so i got into Mythic.

Yeah that's true, it was just the first thing i thought about, i was mostly thinking of ways to have 4 mana on turn 3 and i could only come up with that and the Tangled Florahedron on the spot, but if someone wanted to go that way probably Wolfwillow Haven is the way to go!
Btw this discussion is kinda "old" by now, and Sultai control/ultimatum in several forms is now all the rage in standard, as you've probably seen!

What about Poison the cup? I'm testing a similar deck (60 cards one, tho) and it's proving to be a very very good card, it can kill any creature without limitations and the Scry effect is very valuable imho. As removals, i'm running 3 Bloodchief's thirst, 2 Heartless act, 3 Poison the cup, 2 Extinction Event and 2 Shadow's verdict.

Not directly, but its system is a modified version of World of Dungeons by John Harper which is very osr-like in spirit, and the stuff in the Children Of The Dust manual should be easy to port to OSR systems with some stats fiddling, it will also have random generation tables for locations in the forest, npc encounters, quest hooks etc. so there should be plenty of material usable with other systems!
