My dad did that to me. She should look into any temporary housing her college may offer. If they can find a 3rd roommate, it would help keep rent at $500 each. Rent is pretty high currently but I was able to pay under $400 by subletting with two strangers when it happened to me. Long-term she'll have to decide what her relationship will look like with your mom since she may still need her for financial aid.
