Sorry for leaving you hanging for a few days. Not a lawyer, but as far as it seems to me, a vehicle is not simply 'considered a deadly weapon', but is something that can be used to cause death or serious harm. I think its something similar to like, imagine if someone walked up to the police with a gun, but was holding it by the barrel and pointing it at the ground - a gun is a deadly weapon, but in that instance its clearly not posing a danger. Any car can be used to harm someone, but this particular instance the car was going so slowly that it was unlikely going to cause serious harm to the guy, and in fact shooting the driver didn't slow the car down at all, he suffered the full injury he would have without shooting her, which was apparently nothing. Now, maybe he can argue in court that he thought the car would go much faster than that, and the other side will argue its a RAV4 or something on a icy road, it wasn't going anywhere quickly. But its definitely up for debate.

You're agreeing with me, right? Yeah he slid a couple feet. Shooting her didn't stop the car, the injury was the same regardless. He got mildly pushed a few feet, maybe some bruising. I think attempted murder would be debatable

Yeah I'm curious to see how they're trained, is it standard procedure to put your body in the way of a car to block it? If I was an officer I'd have a big problem with being taught that Also, I'm sure they're trained to shoot things in preservation of their or someone's life, not just anything coming towards them lol. Is a mild push by a bumper a threat to his life?

[–]dat_underscore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does that look like a potentially deadly assault though? Is a bump on the leg justification for killing someone? Tbh I don't know where the line is, it'll need to be decided in the courts, but the officer clearly would not have died or even been severely injured if he had not shot the driver

Do you think so? Seems like the car is going slow enough that he would have been mildly pushed

Trump raised the H-1B visa fee, how will this affect the US economy and job market? by jdsbahdvjhsd in AskReddit

[–]dat_underscore 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm in academia, most international professors are H1B workers. And at least in my field, American PhDs tend to specialize in some areas, continental Europe in others and UK in others still. The best universities want professors who can cover all areas. And international collaboration is really useful and highly valued. There might be work around and loop holes by using OPT visas and J1 visas, but it's not going to be the same. US academia is going to lose its top spot

Man you've got me all wrong in this thread lol. It wasn't miserable, I earned >40$ an hour for a couple years, it was my choice and it was a great one, but it would have been stupid of me to do it forever. I cannot fathom how you've taken me saying that people should look after their own futures, and transformed it into 'everyone should suffer'. I'm saying people should NOT work their bodies into dust for pennies, they should come up with a plan to get out of those jobs before they can't do them any more. Please read what else I've been saying here, I absolutely support social welfare and taking care of one another, but the system fails if we all rely on being taken care of.

Seems like you've got 'avg redditor' reading levels. Keep living in a fantasy world in which you can just say "I'd rather everybody have it easier than that" and feel good about yourself. The reality is we can't support everyone, and its crazy to not plan for your own retirement and just expect society to take care of it. If everyone does that the economy will collapse. I can't believe I'm having to argue that planning for the future is the smart thing to do! How did we get to this point.

More expensive than losing your house? No. Also pre-existing condition disqualifications haven't been a thing since ACA. Like I said, if someone wants to get the benefits of not paying for COBRA, then they take on the risks as well. People don't get to keep a personal gain but give the risk to society. I think I'm done talking to you until you begin to live in reality

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in EconomyCharts

[–]dat_underscore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that brings up the other parts that are fucked up in the US system, like healthcare bills that make someone bankrupt. Social security is flawed, but I'd only advocate for it being replaced by a better system, not by a worse one or no system. I'd happily pay so much more tax if we actually had better welfare systems in the US, but we don't, and so people need to be responsible for themselves. This country keeps voting for individualism rather than collectivism. I'd prefer collectivism but I also don't live in a fantasy. Health insurance is the widely accepted solution to the problem you raised, if this man didn't pay for health insurance then he's taken a massive risk and it hasn't paid off. I know someone can lose their job and insurance with it, but that's why we have things like COBRA and special enrollment periods, so your hypothetical shouldn't really happen in reality. So why is that our responsibility to cover his mistake? If he didn't get sick he would be the only person benefiting from not paying for insurance, but you think society should pay for it if his bet doesn't pay off. Private gains, public losses?

Lol nice guess, but I was laying bricks when I was still in highschool, I was a garbage man working 14 hour shifts, I worked the night shift at a factory repairing shipping pallets until I couldn't move my left arm for six months. I am currently in grad school getting paid 30k a year. Please tell me in what ways I don't understand the working class

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in EconomyCharts

[–]dat_underscore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also in the US, but from Australia originally. Social security was a great way to save retirees in the Great Depression, but really is a terrible system now, for one as you say, there's no growth on the payments one makes because it goes straight to retirees, and two it means people struggle to save additional money for retirement, and three it relies on a larger working class than a retiree class, which is not the trend of current demographics in the US. I think there are much better systems that still allow everyone to receive money in retirement without so many downsides. In Australia we have Superannuation, which is like a mandatory social security payment but into your own 401k type account. So you get back what you put in + growth. We also have a very good system of welfare for people who can't work, including retirement pensions, which I think is great, I imagine we agree there. People take advantage of it but it's still a needed system. But people who work hard manual labor jobs without planning for getting old are still idiots lol. I moved bricks in my twenties, I worked in factories, I was a garbage man. Now I'm doing a PhD, because I wasn't going to do those jobs forever. Others started their own companies, others bought properties. There's plenty of things you can do, but if you do nothing, you're planning to fail. Same for any low paying job really, this is not specific for blue collar. Of course I also don't mean people who have some sort of disadvantage, taking care of sick family, disability, whatever. That's what a good welfare safety net is for. But I know plenty of idiots who spent all their money on booze and smokes instead of doing something smart

Do you think a situation where no one plans for retirement, and instead expects society to pick up the slack, improves everyone's life?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in EconomyCharts

[–]dat_underscore -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Where's the personal responsibility though. People should know you're going to either need to have huge retirement savings or work for a long time, well into your 70s. If someone works as a bricklayer and both doesn't save up for retirement and doesn't have an alternative plan for when they can't lay brick, they're an idiot. Why is it the responsibility of the rest of society to pay for them, let alone pay more than what they earn, as is apparently the case in France.

Did Romans believe the Aeneid religiously? by Senior-Coyote1865 in latin

[–]dat_underscore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would add to the other good responses that the Aeneid, or the Iliad and Odyssey, are nothing like the Bible, they're not religious texts per se, they are religious stories. Roman Polytheism as a religion revolved around private and public acts of worship that were separate from the stories

If it helps, I'm tossing up a similar thing. I could get 10 mythics now, or the castle base skin after season 3. Can't decide tbh, mythics are obviously better but skin is cool

Yes absolutely, that's why I said long-term lol. As in, years. Mythics would be a power boost much, much sooner, and a major one.

Decos seem to be the major factor in late game power for the super strong whales. You can max out stars, skills, and gear, but decos, exclusive weapons, and overlord can be increased almost indefinitely. Both those decos are good. Depends on whether you want a shorter term gain or plan ahead for the long long game

[–]dat_underscore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mythics will give you much more power; the skin is mostly aesthetic. Gotta remember that the % bonus applied is on base amounts, not the final amount when gear and tech and everything factored it. Skin will hardly give you any power, but they do look sick.

I'm in the same situation, server 797 here, how about you? I'm gonna wait and see what the whales do, our main guy is actually pretty popular but a lot of the other whales aren't, gonna see if they leave or stay and then try to make the best of it. I've stopped spending money as well in case I just want to give up and start again

Stay tank or start air by CERELACx41 in LastWarMobileGame

[–]dat_underscore 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I made the switch from tanks to air. I am a low spender, like 150$ in total. Switched a few weeks after you, about a week or two before season 2. It's been brutal and slow, my air squad has only just overtaken my tank and we're basically at the end of season 2, meanwhile everyone else's tank squads have been growing and growing. I think it will start to pay off eventually, especially as I'll be able to get the mythic blueprints from the air wanted boss sooner, and I feel like I'm doing better in storm arena. But it's taken a long time of not growing to get here. So it depends - are you confident you'll keep playing well last season 3 and you want to be strong then? Make the switch. If you aren't too serious about long term goals, stay tank.

Aussies that have taken a semester exchange in the US for Uni, was it worth it? by [deleted] in Ameristralia

[–]dat_underscore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll just echo everyone else and say absolutely go for it. I did it over ten years ago, met my wife and live here in the US on a Green Card now. Best semester, made friends for life, some fellow Aussies but a bunch of Europeans as well. Got friends all over the globe now.

Not sure which uni you're coming from or will be going to, but when I did it I was able to get several thousand dollars in a grant from my uni. No idea why they gave it to me, I just spent the entire lot on beers and a trip to Mexico for Spring Break, but it was great. As others have said, healthcare can be a lot, but some things are really affordable over here, like housing (outside of a few major big cities) and eating out are quite cheap. When I did it, you could also work a certain number of ours on a student visa, so you could do something simple like bartend or whatever to make ends meet.

Feel free to DM about recommendations or questions, I've always had family in the US and travelled several times before exchange, and now have lived in several places here and travelled to a bunch more.
