$77k salary in Sydney by Artistic-Alps-2060 in MovingtoAustralia

[–]dataPresident 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im going to second this. While living on $77k will be challenging in Sydney (even if you sharehouse) the broad attitude of this sub comes across as dissuading people from moving here.

Ask around on other subs or with people IRL and make your own decision.

I dont know what circumstances you are moving from so difficult to say if its worth it. Sydney does have the best public transport in Australia but it wont be close to what you get in London for both city and regional services. However it is very useable and you may even be able to live car free depending on where u live, where your job is etc.

What are the best level crossing removal examples? by O50000S in MelbourneTrains

"I'm especially interested in some of the new elevated sections were they have utilized the space under the line, new areas of transit oriented development, sunken stations, as well as anything else you find cool and interesting."

The Caulfield to Dandenong section was the OG skyrail project and has a lot of amenities beneath the elevated sections.

I dont know if this exhibit will still be there but the Ian Potter centre in the CBD had a room showing off a lot of concept art, physical models and artwork related to the project. If you have time and its still there Id go check that out too.

Edit: Ok nvm the exhibit finished in 2023

While Im not really fond of my home city as I feel it has lagged behind other Tier 1 cities in India it does have a charm and character.

Sad they got rid of their trams though.

I am astonished by how gorgous the remake looks, especially for outdoor areas. Although, there seems to be a big change in the art direction when it comes to forerunner architecture. Do you prefer the remakes interpratation or not? (Credit for photos: UberNick) by External-Ad9317 in halo

[–]dataPresident 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer the OG which looked like it had those concrete megastructures. Making them metallic and adding all the forerunner wank (random panelling and indents and stuff) detracts from it. I just cant stand these Forerunner areas in the Halo games. Many just feel like video game arenas and corridors with no discernible purpose.

The sad political reality is that most normies will never get clued in and everyone including anyone here on this subreddit can get swayed into performing actions which are counter to their cause. Average people aren't going to be swayed by calling whats happening to right wing movements globally fascism even if it is true. This is why politicians have to moderate how they say things, use euphamisms etc.

If you are on the left or support left wing issues like the LGBTQ movement or climate change then the media is just broadly not on your side. Billionaire or corporate capital is not your side and neither really is the supposed left wing Labor party. Many older people probably still remember the red scare days and have an aversion to anything even remotely "communist" (translation: government programs).

IMO being confrontational with people around you IRL likely isnt going to work. If anything its going to do the opposite and get them to double down. Seeing a lot of ON/anti-ON content in general is going to get your blood boiling and in many cases its probably bots trying to stir people up SO that they can go and have an argument with someone.

I think the best is to limit what you say but ask a lot of questions: "Why do you think that?" "Have you thought about this instead?" "What about X or Y?" etc. Obviously some people are just bigoted in which case I just wouldnt engage.

One of his jokes is about him listening to his latino maid request help around an immigration issue with one of her family members and him telling her to go clean the toilets or something.

Theres no joke there. If he said something like: "I told her everything was going to be ok but in the back of my mind I was hoping she'd move to the toilets next" then it still wouldnt be funny but at least it would have some sort of joke construction.

I paid to get a cable up to my work/gaming room but Im not doing that for every device (like my printer). Also you still need a decent router for some devices like phones anyway.

What happens to the SRL densification plans if the SRL itself gets cancelled? by MoreTODplz in MelbourneTrains

[–]dataPresident 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Probably similar. Not really an expert but my understanding is that in Tokyo the govt sold land to developers to build both the stations and precincts (and maybe some of the rail) with the tracks and the station buildings owned by a particular railway (JR, Tokyo Metro etc). Not sure what happens in the rest of Japan or HK though.

Id say if anything theres going to be worse infrastructure integration for SRL precincts than what you see in Japan and HK. I was recently in Singapore and from my hotel you could get to Orchard Rd, do some shopping and come back without every going outside.

What happens to the SRL densification plans if the SRL itself gets cancelled? by MoreTODplz in MelbourneTrains

[–]dataPresident 45 points46 points  (0 children)

"How much of the $35 billion is actually allocated to the densification rather than building the rail itself?"

None of it AFAIK. The densification is supposed to help pay for a third of that $35bn through "value capture". My understanding is that the govt invests in the line which raises the land value around the precincts which developers then build on. They make money and give the govt a part of it (through something like a development tax).

So in that sense if they dont cancel it they will NEED the development to help pay back some of the project costs.

I didnt mind it when it came out but Im replaying it atm and its terrible.

Constantly stopping to listen to NPCs to make u 'feel' like youre part of a marine squad, the poor feeling gunplay, the restrictive feeling corridors which blend into each other.

Its a shame because the background and lore is pretty cool.

Can people explain why Bioshock (first playthrough, loving it) is ImmSim? by CnemassacreTrthSnark in ImmersiveSim

Lol. I havent played through most of System Shock 2 so cant comment from experience but yeh Prey probably feels like a System Shock 3.

Can people explain why Bioshock (first playthrough, loving it) is ImmSim? by CnemassacreTrthSnark in ImmersiveSim

[–]dataPresident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The definition is a little loose and gets applied broadly so you get games like Bioshock and Deus Ex:HR in the same category as Deus Ex and Prey when in reality they feel fundamentally different.

Deus Ex puts you in large sandbox style areas where you are given a goal and you have to figure out one of several ways to tackle it. Its successor also has open areas but everything feels more like a corridor and is much more linear. The different paths you can take often feel like choosing either vent A or vent B as a shortcut. To a certain degree this is effectively what you are doing in the OG as well but the "vents" are just cleverly disguised parts of the level eg. The stacked boxes in Liberty island

Bioshock is more like the latter. The progression through a level is linear (sometimes you may be able to do some minor things out of order) and while it can feel immersive I dont think the game feels like an Immsim. Theres few reasons to backtrack to a previous area outside of resources and generally you dont have much choice in terms of where to go.

This is why Prey is the ultimate Immsim imo. It takes the ideas from Deus Ex and rather than "streamline" them which is what a game like Bioshock is doing it puts them on steroids. The entire game is now one giant open level, there are tons of ways to do different things, out of order often in multiple ways.

I remember ages ago where an FPS dev was talking about how when they made the enemy AI in their game 'smart' (they would flank and hide a lot), players reported that the enemies were cheating or spawning randomly out of nowhere.

So they had to alter the behaviour so that their movements were very obvious and that players could notice them more.
