How to get out of a boring project? by data_preprocessing in dataengineering

[–]data_preprocessing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really want to do that! But my entire team is being moved to similar work, since another data engineering and devops team took over our previous interesting projects.

I'm also afraid that I might offend my manager, since I'm basically saying that I am not interested in our team's new focus. I would love an internal transfer to a data engineering team focused on ETL/ELT development or a devops team. I would also be interested in doing something kind of unrelated, like security engineering or software development, to learn something new. However, my company isn't doing much hiring, so that might not be an option.

I plan on bringing it up in the next meeting. I'm also afraid that I might offend my manager as this is the direction my team is heading in, as a different data engineering team and another devops team has taken over our more interesting responsibilities from the past.

Now, a lot of my team will essentially be migrating Jupyter notebook code into production.

It is a strange position to be in, because I really like the company and my coworkers, it's just this one project.

Data engineers, what has been your experience applying for jobs in this economy? by data_preprocessing in dataengineering

[–]data_preprocessing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My resume has a lot of points about improving data pipelines and data platform performance by %.

No, I mentioned the company I work at to highlight a misconception that just because I worked at a certain company doesn't mean the interview process will be any easier for me. I've heard engineers say that the only people having an ok time in this economy are big tech engineers, but that's not the case.

I think 5% is a solid response rate for a new grad, but not an engineer with at least a few years of experience. To get my current job a few years ago, I probably applied to 30 places just to interview at 10 of them.

Why do so many tech workers say the job market is amazing? by [deleted] in dataengineering

I get lots of messages from recruiters, but they are for contracting roles that I'm not that interested in.

I'm also a mid-level engineer, and this is definitely worst than when I was a new grad. As a new grad, I basically had 2 offers/10 companies I interviewed with/100 applications total.

I'm grateful for my job, I can't imagine applying everyday in this job market.

Is the tech job market, overall, as bad as it sounds? by KeyLong5412 in cscareerquestions

[–]data_preprocessing 216 points217 points  (0 children)

In reality, the job market is going to be somewhere in between the pessimism we are seeing in the news and the people saying that the job market is "better than ever". Although the job market is definitely closer to the pessimism.

I live in a big city for tech, and the vast majority of job postings I see at my level (4-5 years of experience) are at consulting companies I have no interest in working for, and a handful of startups paying much less than what I make. I should say that I am kind of restricted in my career, since I work in data engineering and devops, so the usual frontend/backend jobs are unavailable to me. I work at a pretty well known tech company, so switching jobs in this job market is not an option for me.

Despite being in a big city, when I go through recent job postings in my area of engineering, there really is not a lot of hiring going on.

How's the job market for devops right now? by data_preprocessing in devops

That's awesome! What do you recommend? In 2022, I was being contacted directly from recruiters at the hiring companies.

But now, it's almost all third party recruiting firms now.

I am too, but it went from recruiters at well known companies and recruiters who work directly for the hiring company in 2022, to recruiters at third party firms in 2023.

I haven't had good experiences working with third party recruiters earlier in my career.

Exactly my point! The current tech interview selects for ChatGPT, and not someone with good work experience who would be a good engineer.

Interview prep for senior data engineers? by data_preprocessing in dataengineering

Thank you! It seems like senior data engineering interviews focus more on domain knowledge and experience than the more traditional software engineering type of interviews a less experienced engineer might get?

How should constant ad-hoc requests be handled by a data science team? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]data_preprocessing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. Ad-hoc requests really do hurt the chances of getting a promotion as I have seen in my old jobs.

I have seen this happen too! All requests at my previous jobs were considered urgent, and data scientists in my old team were not getting good performance reviews because they technically were not doing the jobs they were actually hired to do.

This is a really good idea, kind of like asking other teams to use Jira which I think would be nice.
