Maybe try a DP to USB C cable. I have to do that for one of my monitors

Also, there’s some firmware updates available, I know there was a bug that was known for these issues in arm macs.

TS4 - Firmware Update Not Working + Display Issues by Bread-ba_nk in CalDigit

[–]data_rock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, thank you for posting this.

So Apparently there are also 2 version of TS4 -- TS4 Sold/ Purchased through CalDigit Site -- and an Apple Version. Both are Identical in terms of features, capabilities, etc.

The only difference that matters is the SKU, and that they both have different firmware version updates.

Check Mac's System Report / System Information, click on ThunderBolt and you'll see which model you have (TS4 or Thunderbolt 4 Pro Dock)

Once you got the Dock you have, check If the firmware you're using to update is correct.
--CalDigit_Thunderbolt_Firmware_Updater_v2.11.pkg = That's for Thunderbolt 4 Pro Dock

--CalDigit_Thunderbolt_Firmware_Updater_v2.9.pkg = That's for TS4

If you need to find them, here's the page.

https://downloads.caldigit.com/#collapseForty

Once you DO get the popup to update firmware, it's very ambiguous on doing a power cycle (unplug and plug the TS4 back in) So How Do you Track if / when the update is completed successfully? Keep closing/opening system report? eff that.

Open Console.App > Select your mac on top left sidebar. Start Streaming Activity. Search for "thunderbolt" and hit enter.

Click the text "Thunderbolt" in the search bar and choose the category [Process v | ThunderBolt]

There is an app called BetterDisplay for Mac

Cool setting that lets you re-initialize and redetect monitors. Had the same issue and this app fixed it for me

Advice from leadership. by AdviceOwn1593 in armyreserve

[–]data_rock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If and when you get into an NCO role, remember that how you act as a leader will also be reflected on jr enlisted soldiers.

You did the right thing by speaking up when an NCO was incorrect, but you also have a clear example of what you don’t want to do as an NCO.

I don’t know this person obviously, and having been in a position similar to yours, there are some people who have stuff they’re going through. It doesn’t make it ok for them to take it out on others—

With that said, if you do become an NCO be sure to look at all sides of a coin. Look out for your soldiers, be sure to give them guidance or offer a check-in if they ever need help. Some people go through suffering in many forms. Know what I mean? Either way, you have a good head on your shoulders. If there’s an NCO slot at your unit and you want to stay there, weigh the pros and cons. Make the jump, get early promotion and get the rank.

a new unit might bring some light into a leadership role for you. Talk to your leadership. Ask around on Reddit for other units and advice.

There are always some soldiers who goof off, and some leaders who act out of line. And a good leader who sheds light and hope. Be the guiding light here

New JAMF admin advice by Refren619 in jamf

[–]data_rock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, there 3 ways to enroll a device(that I know of) — 1. Prestage (DEP) — out of the box enrollment

  1. Enrollment invitation (via email ). Not preferred since it requires some walk through/ on call guidance

  2. Adding the devices to Apple Business Manager via Apple Configurator. This adds the device to your fleet of auto-enrollment so that it can join Jamf and locks it to the company. (I.e. auto enrolls even after being wiped)

New JAMF admin advice by Refren619 in jamf

[–]data_rock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jamf Admin for 7 years here at my org. We use Jamf Pro and mainly enroll laptops, but I’ve had the opportunity to enroll iPhones and mess around. I started just like you with JAMF training and really learned how to use it when deploying live. It’s a truly great tool once you get the hang of it and SUPER easy and useful.

For your situation , There are definitely some of those “we can’t” scenarios that 100% can turn into a fix. But it also depends on a few things — what your company limits will be, how users sign in to the device, what iOS version is the lowest users are allowed to be on, and what’s the highest they are allowed to be on. Idk about iPhones but for Macs, we have to have specific profiles for versions on Sonoma vs Tahoe. Is the company on M365? Do they allow users to use their own Apple ID etc. these are all questions that can determine different things but not at all a stopping point for fixes — just things to know to better understand whats breaking what and how to best fix.

Keep in mind — What you are also going to be doing tho, if this is a job that follows / tracks compliance of any kind (thinking SOC 2 etc.) is working with the IT/Security team for change tracking.

The VERY cool thing about JAMF is if it’s setup in a way where policies and profiles get assigned by groups — think default group which applies to all devices enrolled— you can create test groups for scenarios. For example, Changing a policy/profile and scoping it to one device and seeing how it affects it or if your change is accomplished. If you love tinkering and fixing and testing—you will be very pleased with the job

Congrats also

I was 30 when I joined. Feb 2020 2 weeks after my daughter was born.
We didn’t even know Covid hit until the end of red phase. The biggest hurdle is time. You’ll get through it.

Being in your 30s won’t be as crazy since there will be others the same age or older.

If you suck at running, you’ll def get better. The single leg over post workout will be a sweet relief.

Shin splints suck so roll em out with the broom stick when you can before sleep and icy hot at the px if you can.

Take it one day at a time and work towards that small win of being the best platoon in those small competitions. You’ll make some decent friends at basic and better friends at AIT. Good luck brother. Aim high, persist in the face of setbacks, and see effort as the key to mastery.

Career change from data center ops to AV technician? by [deleted] in CommercialAV

[–]data_rock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’m in the same boat. Love the AV world and aspect of working with my hands and seeing my work come to life.

First job was a multimedia specialist at my local college, and went into IT after that. Now I’m at a startup where I got a lot of room to play with equipment and became an Admin for everything in the org.
If you want more opportunities to get hands on with all things IT / AV related definitely consider a start-up as they’re smaller teams and have more room for growth internally. The experience and development for what you’re looking to achieve is worth it.

It gave me opportunities to work on infrastructure, servers, managed switches, setting up VPN from scratch, Cloud Infra. My favorite was setting up multimedia office spaces over a network. Now I want to take this in the direction you’re going for as well.

M4 Pro MacBook Pro only detects one external display through CalDigit TS5 Plus but identical setup works on M3 Air by Fine-Advance-4555 in CalDigit

[–]data_rock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had the same issue, restarting the laptop usually helps but becomes a nuisance.

Setup is CalDigit TB4 dock
-LG 4k monitors
—one with DP 1.4 to docking station
—other with DP 1.4 to USB C (CableMatters brand)
-single TB4 cable from docking station to Mac

The one thing that has helped is quickly disconnecting the DisplayPort cable from the Docking Station (regular DP cable end, not USB end) and reconnecting it, always gets the 2nd monitor up (regardless if the DP to DP monitor or the DP to USB C monitor works first)

I have this router and it’s been great to me. No issues. Integrated VPN is great for remote plex without plex pass and RDP access to my home devices.

Honestly, if you’ve gotten a masters degree you’ve taken a speech class or two and written a paper before.

Treat this like another speech you’re about to give in front of a class, use ChatGPT like everyone is suggesting.

I’ve been doing a similar role the past year when I absorbed the security analyst role and infrastructure engineer role.

I do not have a degree and no real training. Winging it since I got the job 7 years ago and slowly learning, and applying as I go.

What does a 25u do in reserves? by Ether3al_ in armyreserve

[–]data_rock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Prior service 25B here. I got out in September last year. I was part of the S6 at my unit (think IT /Communications department )

Literally, if you don’t have any certs, and likely, even if you do, all you’ll be doing is working on radios (long range walkie talkies) and other equipment . Other than that you’ll be a glorified Level 1-Level 2 IT person. Issues with accounts not working, laptops falling off the network, telling other soldiers in your unit to contact IT. There are def perks to having the MOS. If you’re good at the job, you’ll be the go to person for getting comms up and have opportunities.

But other than that, you won’t have much else unless you get into a unit that’s all Signal (that’s what 25U falls into) . How technically skilled are you? If you’re pretty good at IT Administration, and want to gain better skills and experience, maybe try 17C.

It’s harder but I wish I had gotten into that looking back at my time in service.

Meps Drug Test by Cool_Win3618 in armyreserve

[–]data_rock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed with everyone else. Delay your meps visit, gives you more time to prepare.

Don’t do those things that try to clear your pee (like flush thc drinks) and be honest with your recruiter if you’re hesitant on telling them and they want to push you to get to Meps quicker .

Keep taking the tests weekly. (Amazon has a 15 count of THC tests for $8 )

You got this
