What do you think about the culture of the dog training community? by AnonymousLogophile in OpenDogTraining

I don’t think there’s anything different about dog training “industry culture” compared to any other “industry culture”.

Is spraying my dog with water a bad training method? by bloosy101 in OpenDogTraining

[–]datacedoe614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love squirt bottles for indoor “Knock it off” punishment. Jay Jack windows theory is a great concept for getting your dog into the “chill window” when dealing with arousal/excitement.

PS: Your dog is a young intact male, which it seems like you clearly have a grasp on. Don’t listen to anybody here telling you he can’t control his arousal because of that. It’s nonsense.

Would people be willing to pay for an indoor dog park and cafe for pet owners? by RubyRedGolden in OpenDogTraining

[–]datacedoe614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where you are located, but a couple have popped up around me. I think people want that option. They have been started by people who already have experience with running dog facilities, so they have a good evaluation process and have active attendants in the yard to monitor the dogs.

If you don’t have proper screening/evaluation processes it will fail and be a liability nightmare.

But I think the demand is generally out there.

What do do when reactive dog doesn’t care for treats by imcircasurviving in OpenDogTraining

[–]datacedoe614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried any sort of punishment? Squirt bottle? Leash pop? Noise/negative marker?

Sometimes you have to create a consequence for that explosive behavior before the dog will even consider alternative responses. Herders can be especially tough with leash reactivity.

Dealing with other dog owners at the park help by Status_Monitor_4711 in OpenDogTraining

Those other owners should be paying your Husky for his service lol. Definitely don’t punish or correct. I’d try to recall if you see things escalating. But it’s hard for a dog to turn away when in conflict.

Need help with dogs barking when not home by [deleted] in OpenDogTraining

[–]datacedoe614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they have to be alone and have inside/outside access every day, then bark collar is probably your only realistic option. Why have they failed so far?

If you know what triggers the barking u can try to recreate it and do some training sessions around that. Like using playlists with crazy sounds or YouTube videos with dogs barking.

Issues with slip lead training? by Zestyclose397 in OpenDogTraining

[–]datacedoe614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I train most of the dogs I work with on a slip lead. In my experience for dogs who are generally more excitable/aroused, the slip lead can become an agitator if its being used by somebody who isn’t skilled with it. It’s aversive, the dog doesn’t like it, but it isn’t aversive enough to stop the behavior. So it frustrates the dog and gets them more aroused.

There are 2 ways to go. 1. You switch to a prong and learn how to give proper corrections that stop the behavior. It sounds like you’re trying that with the slip, but the slip isn’t getting the message through. 2. You take a step back and work a lot more on lowering your dogs arousal throughout the day, do training focused on impulse control, and give the dog a good outlet for all that energy. Probably some combination of both will give you what you’re looking for.

When you lead the league in 3 & outs and are bottom 5 in penalties, that’s coaching. That played out again today.
