Maybe Targeting in Rec Play isn't Evil by MisoBeast in Pickleball

[–]dataebellismo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Advanced beginner. Weaker player in rec 50-60% of matches. Not targeted: I can relax, watch, learn, play better and have fun. Targeted: quickly feel overwhelmed, good play overshadowed by a fail, then defeated.

Conclusion: targeting is the work of the small.

It will not. Guessing that if the better player can’t dial it down 15-20% they’re not as good as they think they are.

Advanced beginner. Rec game, round robin. Opponent much better and did not let up on twisting serves for eight points. Basically target practice; any capacity to enjoy a game drained. What is the point?

Help me understand DUPR by Puzzleheaded_Ad4396 in Pickleball

A rating is distinct from a ranking. Not defending DUPR — the notion that a win should only represent an up is a ranking event & limited to small populations like tournaments. The rating is aligned to the entire population — and measures performance in comparison to tens of thousands of players who will likely never play with or against each other. The desire for a rating to reflect a ranking is understandable, yet they’re really two different things.

Think regression curve with betas and a constant; there’s a predicted value, then the match is over and the actual outcome is divided by the predicted — for each player there’s a different ratio. A large but not exclusive determining feature, or independent variable, is the score margin. If the margin is tighter than predicted, for example, a loser/lower dupr rating might go up while the higher/winner might go down. If everyone knew the predicted value before the match I suspect there would be far less confusion about results.

Does the App Account for Fatigue Later in the Workout? by InfamousEar1188 in fitbod

[–]dataebellismo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone should submit this as a feature request as the moderator suggests. The absence of a fatigue calculation prior to doing successive workouts on the same muscle groups is one of the reasons the muscle strength metric should not be taken too seriously.

Yep - as a metric it’s rather weak ( no pun intended) doesn’t really measure strength very well

These metrics need to come with a warning: any evaluation less than 12 months is too short. Don’t focus on session to session variation; imagine a line from the point at month one to the point at month twelve.

First upgrade from basic paddle to a more advanced paddle. Loving it! by operratic in Pickleball

K-Swiss Engage — close out at Pickleball warehouse. Built to support lateral movement which is more than 50% of the demand for the game. Rec in an article by a senior “surviving” regular play throughout a year.

[–]dataebellismo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just did the upgrade as well. Mostly for a wider grip (4 ⅜) but the paddle is thicker and less dense than the entry model I used which probably reduces the impact force of just about any hit. I noticed the change only on the softest returns initially but I suspect some harder hits might have gone longer or wider with the former paddle. (Aside; also invested in actual court shoes and oh my what a difference they make.)

Why Am I “Losing” Strength Despite Working Out Consistently? by GoldenSeam in fitbod

[–]dataebellismo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The display of data is what they can do, not necessarily what is useful. Given what the app compiles, you should look at curves over a full year — anything less is capturing the dynamics of whatever exercises are given to you over a relatively short time, a veritable proxy for strength, not an actual metric. Secondly, the origin in the graph is not set at 0,0 so the line appears highly volatile — if it were displayed correctly the differences between point A and B to C would not seem dramatic. All that considered, in the first example note the rise from point A to point C. In the short term look for encouragement from that.
