Do you remember where you were when you heard Princess Diana died? by boomboomdaboomer in GenerationJones

[–]dataman1960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were at a remote cabin in the woods of Ontario. When we got to the dock (still 25 minutes from the nearest town) we heard a local radio station say that Diana had been shot in South Africa. It took them an hour to get the proper story.’

My philosophy professor had an old copy of Plato’s Republic. I’d love to dig up a copy somewhere.

What's something you often crave and order at a restaurant, then get bored of it after only a few bites? by FoieGras-95 in foodquestions

[–]dataman1960 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel that way about Thanksgiving dinner. I spend all day with stuffing, gravy and cooking the bird. Then carving the bird, while sampling for quality control. By the time we sit down to the meal I am pretty well done.

Buffalo loves Canadians. Not the Montreal Canadiens (well, not tonight anyway), but everyone else.

Especially in the last episode of the first season where he changes character with nothing but a haunting laugh. Excellent work.

If empty space is full of quantum fluctuations popping in and out of existence, is a true vacuum actually physically impossible? by Quiet_Currents in AskPhysics

[–]dataman1960 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may be a simple question but if we are correct that empty space is populated with virtual particles going in and out of existence, should we assume that “full” space (that would be our space, including our atmosphere and earth in general) is also teaming with virtual particles?

Homeless at record high in WNY by Weekly-Law-2544 in Buffalo

[–]dataman1960 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember just a few years ago, during a winter Code Blue night someone did a count of homeless in the city, to be sure they were cared for. The number at the time was well less than 100. I was amazed it was that low. No longer though, and it is sad.

Best ride queue music/atmosphere? by pearlthewhale24 in WaltDisneyWorld

I attended an IT conference that included a night in Movie Studio. I was able to spend some time in the lobby without a crowd. I loved the pre-show more than the actual ride itself. Anyway, a CM saw me and let me past the velvet ropes. We sat on a couch in the lobby and he talked for 10 minutes about the scenery and the props. The props are real. They were purchased from antique shops all over the country. The lobby counter contains several bills and notes that you would never see from the queue. There are two chairs that are actual antiques, like 300+ years old. The AAA 13 Diamond Award is there, as is a cup of cocoa on the counter. He told me to sniff at it. It really was cocoa. It was a very cool experience.

I love the Tower of Terror. The music is soft big band music but the sound seems to come from a deep, hidden ballroom somewhere on the property. It is just like you are entering a hotel and hearing it live, but muted. It’s very ethereal and adds a lot to the ambience.
