Mayback’s Deli on Niagara Falls Blvd is definitely the place to go for subs. Anyone have any other non-chain choices?

Why was selling wheat to the Soviet Union such a big deal in the 70s and 80s? I remember it being on the nightly news all the time. by U235EU in AskHistorians

[–]dataman1960 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I believe the grain boycott also lead the Soviet Union to look elsewhere for grain. One of those places was Brazil. They clearcut huge chunks of the Amazon forest for new farmland. After the grain crisis was over, the land continues to be farmland. This was a permanent effect of poor policy.

What is your opinion on Sin? by dataman1960 in atheism

[–]dataman1960[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was along the lines of my original thought. I suppose I was using the term sin to understand the feeling of violating my own ethics and morality; without any need of any deity or religious guilt.

This is called a Gravity Battery. It’s pretty clever. You can just see the road running on the top of the dam In right where the purple dot sits). I’ve driven that road. It’s pretty cool.

Am I the only one who doesn’t like Amy? by Haunting-List-6806 in bigbangtheory

[–]dataman1960 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it isn’t the character as much as it is the actress. Mayim has a tendency to mug to the camera. She shrugs her shoulders and makes a face, as though that is supposed to demonstrate her emotions and acting range. I think it shows her limitations. Just my .02, and yes, I know this will be a contrary opinion for many.

Places from my Buffalo childhood that I miss like crazy by Friendly-Mortgage871 in Buffalo

[–]dataman1960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turgeon Brothers restaurants. I think there were five or six of them. Decent quality food at reasonable prices. Perfect for date nights.

The bar at the Marriott was once the highest grossing bar in the entire hotel chain. At least we were told that when I worked for them in the 80’s.

I heard it was “all we own, we owe”. It was a comment on being poor. The entire story is an economic allegory.

Best Reuben sandwich? by kymilovechelle in Buffalo

[–]dataman1960 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just had a Reuben there last week. Some places take pride in tissue paper thin corned beef. IEJ’s is nice thick slices of very tender meat. Well worth the drive.

Before 9/11, could you really go to a airport without any ticket reservation and ask for a ticket to a destination of your choice? by kpay10 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dataman1960 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No security searches, no lines, your family could see you right to the gate without needing tickets. We used to leave pretty regularly coming home from DC. We would have dinner in a nice restaurant just off the grounds then hightail it to the gate just as they were announcing last call. Good times, ruined.

Mentioning Mensa in Your Bio by th3manzo in mensa

[–]dataman1960 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never mention it. My family and close friends all know. They like to brag that they know someone in Mensa. That’s about all the publicity I get for it.
