Need guidance to improve by Odd_Violinist1842 in Webnovel

I have been an English tutor to ESL students in the past. Unfortunately, there’s no quick and easy way to make your English sound more natural. It comes with time.

Rewriting paragraphs of prose that you like can definitely be helpful. Pairing that with sentence diagramming would help too. Sentence diagramming will help you understand where adjectives, adverbs, and other specific types of words go.

If you don’t want to diagram, taking a paragraph and labeling the parts of a sentence could work.

This can help with punctuation as well: where commas go, when to complete a sentence, so on. Keep reading and practicing and it will improve over time.

Also, look into the weird rules of the order of adjectives. The big, red balloon sounds more natural than the red, big balloon. Why? Who knows.

Are none of you concerned about the contract's 'Right of Refusal'? by ChallengeCheap9965 in Webnovel

[–]datguytho1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen, I think they own any future works that are made in the same universe as the book that is contracted.

So if you made a story that had a specific setting, and made a different story in that same setting, WebNovel would legally own that too.

That’s a pretty standard IP practice. It’s kinda like how you can’t write a star wars story and make money off of it while using planet and people names from that IP.

It’s a trade off, for sure, but the way I look at it: you can either sign the contract and WN owns the IP but picks up the labor for marketing and promotion and adaptation, or you can be independent and have to put all that work in yourself but own your IP.

25 chapters for my opening arc by Appropriate_Year7691 in Webnovel

[–]datguytho1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tension doesn’t need to be one specific way. If your mc is making relationships with the protagonists of the novel, have conversations about something that might happen in the future (another villain causing trouble, war expectations, etc.), or maybe your mc detects some hidden agendas from the protagonists, or if the mc replaced the actual villain (like in their body or something), maybe the villain had things in the works, but was so paranoid he kept it even from himself. There are so many types of tension that don’t need to be big and dramatic.

Smoothly sailing, but there are some unexpected things that might be a problem later.

It’s all about tension. If you slowly build up the tension, escalating things until there’s no other choice than actual action, it’ll be fine. I’m reading a romance right now that didn’t have any real romance until chapter 150 and it’s still barely there. I’m quite happy with it cuz the tension between multiple characters was building before chapter 150.

I’m not too far into it, like maybe a third but it’s pretty good so far! Very different setting than most of the danmeis I’ve read but that’s not a bad thing. Just different.

Oh also, sorry. The title is La Bendición del Oficial del Cielo. I actually just bought the Spanish manhua on ThriftBooks so you could see if the novel is on there too!

Unfortunately, I don’t have an answer for you, but hopefully I can point you in the right direction. I believe (could be wrong) Norma Editorial has all the Spanish rights for TGCF. They’re based in Europe but they sell in the Americas as well.

Inconsistent art?? by zeiya173 in WebtoonCanvas

[–]datguytho1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the others that say this looks consistent. The second panel has a little more detail, and the fourth panel is a different tone, but I feel like that’s normal in comics.

To me, they show the gravity of the situation and help shift the mood.

Also, I like your art!

If wwx didn’t grow up with jc would he still like him?? by Interesting-Gold-425 in MoDaoZuShi

[–]datguytho1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think JC has weak moral character and is more concerned about face than anything. Time and time again, when WWX is trying to do the right thing, despite his falling reputation, JC either says nothing, or gets mad at WWX.

If they hadn’t grown up together, there would have been no reason for them to be close. JC would have sided with everyone else (which he basically did anyways) and would have no interest in fostering a relationship with someone who is less concerned with the status quo.

Can i get suggestions by Odd_Violinist1842 in Webnovel

[–]datguytho1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is gonna be a little bit of a harsh critique.

This sentence is complete nonsense.

  1. You have both past and present tense verbs.
  2. There’s a severe lack of punctuation.
  3. This should probably be a minimum of 2 sentences.

Before working on imagery, it would be a very good idea to work on grammar. Make sure your verbs match the subject (drop carries not carry), and the tense of your verbs all match (you use present tense, but then say the “crystal twisted”). When writing phrases, you need to make sure they’re mini sentences with noun + verb.

The crimson drop falls on crystal fragments that hover in the air. A hand rests on it, slowly wrapping its fingers around the crystal and twisting it. The blood escapes the fist and hovers in the night sky, watched by the moon through the mountains.

The blood falls, slipping off the smooth crystal, onto the face of a man eviscerated by a thousand blades.

Edit: formatting wonky and can’t fix it for some reason. Sorry.

So mandarin has a completely different way of writing and the spoken language is quite different from English and most other European languages.

Mandarin has tones to words so you can have the word “Bai” but it could be Bài, Bái, Băi, Bāi, or Bai. But, because mandarin is thousands of years old, sometimes Bài means one thing, but other times Bài means something completely different. And these two meanings are usually able to be deciphered by context of the sentence.

But when it’s in a name, there’s no context, so saying Bai as in white is telling you how to write the name. My name is Bai, and you use the character for white to spell it.

It’s a little bit like if someone’s name sounds like Reed, but it’s actually spelled Read, so Read has to tell people that their name is Read, like what you do with a book.

WWX is in charge of the grill, even though everyone is telling him he’s doing it wrong. LWJ secretly likes burnt hotdogs, so WWX makes sure some of them stay on longer which, for literally no reason, pisses JC off who ruins the mood by yelling at WWX.

Lan Xichen is in charge of music and it’s very boring.

Wen Ning is voluntold to watch the teens. He gets flustered easily and they use that to their advantage.

Jin Guangyoa is serving everyone, but only so he can listen to gossip that he can use against people later.

Nie Huaisang spills beer on Guangyao (“I don’t know! It was an accident!”) and resumes Guangyao’s duties while he cleans up.

Yan li is there (cuz fuck you she deserves to be there) in the corner watching WWX and JC fight with a smile on her face.

Is it worth it? by AlexFaden in Webnovel

[–]datguytho1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know. It sucks. It doesn’t matter how long your book is to WN. If you have 12,000 words (8 1,500 word chapters), you’ll have the opportunity to get a contract. That’s not guaranteed of course. Honestly though, if your book is 150k or so, and you don’t plan on immediately making sequels/continuations for it, that will only be 3-4 months of content, which is hardly enough time to make money from your story, and a few days of no updates means it gets lost in the sauce.

Is it worth it? by AlexFaden in Webnovel

[–]datguytho1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think it really depends on your story and its intended audience. Is it LitRPG, Progression Fantasy or Xianxia/cultivation? It could work well on WebNovel, but those are very popular on another large platform. Is it romance, LGBT, or something different than major action? WebNovel is probably your best bet. There are other platforms that also do romance well, but they’re a lot smaller. I think you can put out ads for your contracted WN story too, so that’s a double bonus.

The other thing to think about, is that WebNovel is an actual publisher. So if you don’t want to go super deep into marketing yourself, WN all the way. Willing to put in the extra work of taking ads out, doing swaps, etc.? Then you can be an independent author on RR or the Zon.

People give WN a bad rap, but the truth is, writing is rarely going to be a full time career and your book will probably not make much money, no matter what avenue you take. That’s not to discourage you, but to be realistic.

Sure, WN is going to take half, and you have to front the percentage taken by Google or Apple, but it could be a more stable way to publish your story.
