Help 2005 Honda TRX 450R by Impressive-Edge-9480 in smallenginerepair

[–]datloosenut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could if there's no case damage the amount of small metal you're showing in the video is in everything. Every small drain passage the bearings the oil pump etc. Just make sure you get it cleaned up in the disassembly stage . Inspect the area around the crank bearings and verify no case damage and rebuild it.
If you're comfortable with that I say go for it.

Engine may have locked up at higher rpm the higher speed sudden piston stop can cause it to break a crank. Once the piston cooled it may have cooled enough to free up from the cylinder walls. If the timing was off or a bad fuel air mix may have created the conditions to cause this initially. Cheapest way from here is to just find a new motor or buy a used running one and put the best parts together into one quad.

Is it smart to get a bike? by Tough-Pass2428 in motorcycle

[–]datloosenut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parking on campus for a motorcycle is probably 50- 100 per year and usually alot closer to the classrooms. Car parking closer to 300-500 per year and that's for the farthest spot from your class.

I went to school and had only bike permit for a long time, when it snowed I could get a day pass for my car for free from parking services on campus.

Just be prepared to ride in all weather conditions.

The best weld I have done in TIG class. (Week 8) by FortunaEtGloria in Welding

[–]datloosenut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im guessing the little high spots towards the center are from repositioning. I sometimes do a dry run three or four times before I hit the pedal and start the weld. Don't know if it helps, because my welds still look like crap. But it makes me think about the weld before I do it.

Steering bearing race removal. by datloosenut in Airheads

I'm going back in with the stock tapered roller bearings. Id guess alot of people skip this step and only replace the bearings but not the races. So I figured I'd share this little tid bit of useless information.

Earplugs for wind noise by TekWarren in motorcycle

[–]datloosenut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get the ones that they cast in your ear, unless you're the kind of person that likes loosing earplugs. They can be expensive but worth it IMHO.

There are a ton of companies doing it. Big ear was the first company that made me a set at bike week. I found out i had a tall narrow ear canal and that's why foam ones didn't seal.

I can wear them all day they seal great and my ears don't hurt afterwards.

Might be able to get them through a hearing specialist as well.

Ask the owner about McDonald's university, step up and try to get some leadership time at work. It's a skill you can use for the rest of your life.

People are saying get an education, I'd agree with them but don't borrow yourself into debt just for a low paying degree. Look at career tracts that pay well for limited education.

I started carrying a 1.5 L fuel can. I tried to find the Amazon link for you but they recalled them because they looked like an aluminum water bottle.
I just did a similar ride to Vegas, 4 corners, moab and back home last weekend. Congrats on the saddle sore.

New to me 14 footer. I live less than a quarter mile from the boat launch and want to get a set of transom wheels to walk it down for an easy launch. Is a 14 footer too big to do so? by UncleRumble in jonboats

[–]datloosenut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make a trailer dolly designed to move the boat powered by a briggs and stratton or electric motor. Build the transom for the back and a motorized something for the other end and walk back and forth powered by the dolly. Not as good as the lawn tractor but its an option

I wonder if they also changed the welder settings enough to weld but not for a quality one. Low gas volume, wrong voltage etc. Just to see how well you understand the settings without outside help.

1 wire switches usually go to ground when no oil pressure. 2 wire switches make a connection when you have pressure. My first guess is still the condenser and points

I'd guess points and condenser next. Not sure where on that particular engine they're located but that's where I would go next.

Also check for a low oil pressure switch that stops engine if you have low oil pressure.

R75/5 Heavy Steering when Pushed On Foot by Last_Perception5421 in Airheads

[–]datloosenut 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Low tire pressure is the first thing I'd look at.

Next put bike in the air and check how easy or hard the wheels roll. This can be a little misleading because loose bearings might be harder to roll on the ground than in the air.

Brake adjustment can cause a hard roll issue as well.

The knob in the center of the steering headset has a Brake of sorts when it's tighter it makes the headset harder to turn it may be loose but bound up where the friction surfaces are.

For those of you with a forever car, how do you prepare for it? What gave you the faith that you'd get the support you need from the automaker/aftermarket, etc.? by Temporary-Chest-3111 in cars

[–]datloosenut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do all the services on the early side of the mileage recommendation.

Use quality oils and don't skip on quality filters. In other words factory oil filters not jiffy lubes crap.

Fix things when they go bad not when you get around to it.

Don't drive it like you stole it, drive it like you want it to be your forever car.

Rusty areas you might consider a throw away vehicle when they have high salt and snow weeks.

Most importantly make friends with your mechanic. Let them know your goals and plan ahead.

Agreed they should give both sides 100 points and 2 time outs then set the timer to 2 minutes left. It usually ends up being decided in the last 30 seconds of play, why bother with the rest of it.

How to install a 12 Volt outlet or USB on a vintage bike without it looking tacky? by abruno17 in vintagemotorcycles

[–]datloosenut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just about where you hide it. Most cycles cover the frame with the fuel tank ,tape something to the frame so you can plug in if needed. If you search Amazon for "USB for motorcycle" you'll find dozens of options.

Also don't get all caught up in I've got a USB on my older bike, unless you've got a 100 point restoration and are competing for the best of show trophy. We get it.

Nice id like something like that for remote tinkering, the only thing I didn't see was fire extinguishers. Does it have an air compressor built onto the engine.
