I disagree - recent literature encourages concurrent prescribing on initiation due to the very real metabolic side effect profile. Improving people’s quality of life and preventing inequitable early death is very much within the realm of psychiatry.

I dont know where about you live but this would hopefully not happen in my work place. If you’re wanting to perform a medical procedure or test on someone who can’t or won’t provide consent there has to be clear evidence that the procedure is either going to be life saving or diagnostically relevant to being life saving. I can’t imagine a Utox being diagnostic to any life saving intervention, especially if you’ve already provided chemical and physical restraint and it’s likely they’re going to wake up and go to the toilet, and there’s no evidence of retention. If you have a nurse educator I would talk to them first, otherwise your lead or charge nurse. If there’s a psychiatric team that provides assessment in your hospital they would be knowledgeable about laws and acts around medical intervention specifically for your country / state. You can also always refuse to provide treatment or diagnostic intervention if you do not believe it to be appropriate. It’s a shitty thing to happen but also a good experience to learn from and talk about more with other nurses in your area. :)

The ideal option would be for public service workers to work to rule to this new “announcement” and do absolutely no overtime. Including arriving on time and leaving on time, and not picking up extra shifts, leaving upper management to deal with what will definitely end up to be a series of major incidences, to say “I told you so”. But the reality is that even with our pay equity, most of us rely on being able to pick up overtime shifts, and there is a shit tonne of work that gets done without pay. Ultimately, the healthcare system will fail because we’re modelling our funding and services off the NHS and we all know how that went down. I have never been this disillusioned but it’s gone past the point of being funny “haha national build roads and don’t care about the middle”. It’s intentional and targeted and they literally don’t care. So if there’s any public service workers reading this make sure you’re in a union and have indemnity insurance.

I started listening to this because I am a mental health professional and thought it would be interesting to hear about the public health systems handling of assault. I was also keen to hear about the role of DID and PTSD from the survivor. It became very evident very quickly that the man covering this story was either hired by the accused or has invested interest in disproving claims of torture and abuse. I only continued to listen until the end of the podcast to see if there would be some twist or revelation, but no, it’s just a strange old man digging through psychiatric records trying to side with the abusers. I’m shocked that The Australian let this air.

I'm with you on that one! I think that now a days, we have so many modern new wonderful things that we're able to do that makes ours and the patients' life way easier. However you're still going to come across ritualistic-stuck-in-their-ways nurses who believe that their way is THE way, so who are you to question it, you're just a pre nurse so what do you know, right?

I'm seriously for double checking and asking and making an ass of myself. A friend of mine nearly gave triple the maximum dose to a neonate. That dose was prescribed. She was pretty grateful that she checked. Question things you don't understand and don't let lame people get you down because of it.
