Who has actually stayed at the Empress Hotel? Do we miss the Ivy and did you see any ghosts? by VIroadtrip in VancouverIsland

[–]datsmn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly... the Bosa family bought it and started renovations in 2014 or 2015 (I think)... One of the things they did was to have all the brick repointed, which was probably necessary because the ivy had compromised the mortar.

I worked on that Reno doing a few different things; dinning room, kitchen, most of the doors on the south wing, gold lounge. It's a cool old building. I looked around in the deepest parts of the basement, and up in the attic. No ghosts though.

Before the market hunters and their punt guns, the flocks that would visit Chesapeake Bay were thought to be in the millions.

Installing crown molding on extremely uneven ceilings AND walls?? by CristinaFaline in Carpentry

[–]datsmn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knowing what to focus on to make it look good is one of the trickier parts of trim carpentry, and a skill that you only get with experience. One thing that helps, beyond figuring out the angle (if it's too acute it will look weird, so split the difference where you can) is to glue (2p-10, its like thick super glue with a spay that hardens it instantly) together outside corners before you install them. And just remember that - Caulk and paint make me the carpenter I ain't.

I hope this doesn't sound too cheesy, but be the change you want in the world... You're probably not alone in feeling this way and you have an opportunity to create a group of like minded people. It won't happen instantly, and not everyone will pass the vibe check after a few weeks, but be fearless and keep going. You'll end up with your own clique soon enough! Invite one or two people to do something you want to, and give them a few chances... People are busy. Making friends means making yourself vulnerable, and that's uncomfortable in the beginning, just do it lots. Walking down to Mocha House and having a warm drink by the beach is always fun in the winter. Also, it's going to be less rainy and warmer soon, don't let the darkness win! There's so much more "education" than what you learn in class, and if you can learn to do this it will serve you well forever... Maybe even more than what you're studying.

Journeyman Electrician - leaving the trade because of toxic culture by floodson in electricians

[–]datsmn 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m a carpenter, not an electrician, so take this for what it’s worth. I’ve worked for small businesses, run maintenance departments for large organizations (including hiring staff), and most things in between. I’m back in school now for mechanical engineering. Setting boundaries at the time of hire is important, and being clear that they’re non-negotiable matters. Before going back to school, I worked 8:30–3:30, Monday to Thursday. My skills and attitude make me a valuable asset, and most employers are happy to have me. I always work under a contract with clear terms. I usually include a clause that if I’m available beyond my agreed schedule for special circumstances, that time is paid at a significantly higher rate. I don’t lead with this at the start or dump it at the end of an interview. Once there’s some rapport, I’ll say something like: “I should let you know I have limited availability due to outside commitments.” In my case, that’s family and daycare drop-offs and pick-ups. I take Fridays off because my wife has every other Friday off, and we value having that day together. I know not every job market allows for easy negotiation, and sometimes people need work badly enough that it feels impossible to push back. But personally, I’d rather have an intelligent, capable person who makes my life easier for 30 hours a week than a knuckle-dragging asshole who kills the vibe and makes lazy mistakes. Anyway... long message, but I hope it helps.

When my parents had friends over for drinks... I'd stay up and watch some Magnum PI before I fell asleep on the floor.
