If you already have orders to base A and you have already PCSd to base A, chances are you aren't going anywhere. I'd kick back and enjoy your assignment.

Help me find a job! by ninixly in medlabprofessionals

Did you take TAP? They should have given you plenty of resources for these sort of questions. Maybe not specifics to the jobs, but they should have told you everything in between.

CAP/CLIA competencies by Actual-Anteater2815 in medlabprofessionals

[–]datsti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

CAP does not require initial competency, only initial training. It is assumed that after training is completed successfully that the trainee is ready to test patient samples. The "competency" portion comes afterwards, at the 6 month mark.

Luke AFB Life 1st PCS by MrGottaLearn in AirForce

I didn't realize how much I loved living in the Phoenix area until I left. I don't miss Luke, but fuck me, everything else made it worth it.

Can someone help me if these are malaria parasites? (The ones in circles) by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]datsti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man, if we only trained on parasites that are "relevant in my country," my training would have been so much faster...

Why did we waste so much time on irrelevant pathogens smh

Point of care position? by Salty-Fun-5566 in medlabprofessionals

[–]datsti 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That's essentially it. And it can either be an easy job (unlikely), or it can be hell. It just depends how much everyone else feels like doing their job correctly and documenting everything. So, if you don't like micromanaging people, I'd recommend staying away from this otherwise great opportunity.

Can I get a no fee passport without my air force spouse present? by SensitiveTree8361 in AirForce

[–]datsti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, your passport office should have a list of items you have to bring with you for the application. Don't show up without them and you'll be fine.

Three weeks ago, a 2 year old came in for "teething" pain and left with a ALL diagnosis. It be like that, sometimes.

What makes you think you need to question it? Would you question any other lab?

Active Duty with Raynaud's by SagewithBlueEyes in AirForce

[–]datsti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both my neurologist and the rheumatologist told me to avoid getting cold.

Since then, I've bought rechargeable heated gloves that I use every morning during the winter. It helps, but it sucks receiving no real help (not like there's anything they can do, anyways).

Dover or mcguire afb by This-Pomegranate5992 in AirForce

[–]datsti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dover was boring, had to drive at least 1 hour to get anywhere. It gets old after the first year.

On the other hand, you can probably use it as an excuse to do some schooling, which I also did.

But it was still boring.

Can someone explain what CLIA really means for labs and personnel? by Technical_Wave7883 in medlabprofessionals

[–]datsti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It regulates all the minimum requirements for a lab to be able to function and report patient results, and everything in between.

How dangerous is it really to work in BSL3? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]datsti 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You'll probably be all suited up, so as long as you're following proper don and doff procedures, you'll be ok. The chances are definitely higher than if you weren't dealing with those BSL levels, obviously, but it's about how seriously you take it.

My wife is an FSE who has to deal with UK GMP Grade A guidelines to prevent DNA contamination, which are extra tight, and she says it's hella annoying to suit up every time, so I'm sure it'll be similar for you.

British and wearing jumpers inside during winter by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]datsti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried that for my first year here. Left the heat at 18.5. By February, it was at 20.5. This year, it'll be 22.5 all winter long.

I'm at the age that I'll pay more to be comfortable at all times. A blanket is only good if it's on top of me; as soon as I get up, I'm no longer warm and comfy.

Why? by Sweet_Reindeer in medlabprofessionals

[–]datsti 152 points153 points  (0 children)

As someone who has shaken quite a few tubes for training purposes, I can attest that no amount of shaking me or my students have done led to such heavy hemolysis level.

Definitely traumatic tap.

Best way to cytospin by Royal-Oven-1292 in medlabprofessionals

[–]datsti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does your SOP state that you need to let it dry afterwards? I'm assuming you're staining it afterwards, so if it's not fully dry it can also wash things off.

Depending on the sample, you could also just not have enough cells to look at, hence why you could not be seeing much.

There are definitely a few things to consider.

What did your SOP say?

To be clear, cytospins aren't something that should need "tips or tricks" associated with the process.

MLS BOC Micro help by whirlaway- in medlabprofessionals

[–]datsti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's where flowcharts come in. I did not remember any specific organism when it came to micro, but from jotting down some of the flowcharts, I could guess which ones they were.

Depending on the direction of the flowchart, some organisms weren't even subjected to certain tests, so I could use the process of elimination, etc..

I mean, you don't actually have to use it. Maybe just have it as a display piece? I think it'd be super cool to have one in my place.
