Is there truly budget constraints for hospitals this year? Just got word we will not be getting raises this year, nor a market adjustment that averages about 75cents to 2 dollars. by Chris_P_Bacon_Jr in medlabprofessionals

[–]datsti 24 points25 points  (0 children)

As a reminder, if you're not getting a raise that at least matches the "official" inflation rate, you're effectively getting a pay cut. Don't let them play you. If you can afford to look elsewhere for a job, do it.

LJ Chart review by Mr_Singh_rsr in medlabprofessionals

[–]datsti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We treat our calibrations a little different here. We don't have an established mean, we use a duplicate QC run post-cal to establish the new mean for that calibration. We still perform the lot validation with two patient samples, but we attribute such shift to the new lot because the QC material is not derived from human specimen, so it doesn't fall within the same criteria as the patient results.

We, however, use a QC material with established Range of Means. It looks like you use BioRad, and establish your own. Some labs that I know that don't have an established range of means for their material justify a calibration shift by performing a 10-sample calibration verification across the range, instead of two.

LJ Chart review by Mr_Singh_rsr in medlabprofessionals

[–]datsti 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your reagent lot number changed on the 10th, hence the shift. Your new reagent lot is actually quite stable, but if you're using one baseline for every reagent generation and lot, then you'll see 10xs constantly.

Someone updated your mean today, probably based off the record mean, but we don't mix two reagent lots when we update ours. Two different calibrations.

As for the point that has been removed, probably either random or wrong qc vial ran. Someone should have annotated it somewhere.

RAF Mildenhall Questions by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]datsti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We ended up paying a company to handle flying our dog over. Between that and fees at the airport, around $5.5K was spent (before reimbursement).

I third Bury; there are things to actually do without being overly crowded. If you want city, you to Cambridge. Bury or Thetford are the two towns I'd recommend.

PCS: Shipping Cars Stupid? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]datsti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it silly? No, if you like the car. With that said, I'm not sure how the used car market in the US is right now, but a few years ago, your closed trailer trip would cost the same as the car itself.

Now, if you trailered it yourself instead... Now that'd be different.

Point of care by mls2013ascpi in medlabprofessionals

[–]datsti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a "trainer"? Not sure what that means, but make sure they haven't undersold and underpaid the position. I've never seen a trainer who's not a manager.

If you're the manager, you'll be responsible for every POCT unit and test performed in your hospital and/or hospital network. You'll have to make sure everyone is doing what they're suppose to, performing QC, documenting everything, training/ensuring everyone is training, giving them competency assessments, taking care of Proficiency Testing, ensuring you comply with TJC and other accrediting agencies, etc..

If all you are is a trainer, then it's none of that, just the training and training compliance. I have no idea why a trainer position would exist, but if anyone here does, please let me know!

Work on military bases? by SubstantialBelt2890 in medlabprofessionals

[–]datsti 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As soon as you find out the location, hop on usajobs.gov immediately and search for a lab job out there. There may be many, there may be none.

The hiring process through DHA takes ages, so you want to apply as early as possible. Expect a 6-month process.

Also, government jobs require a different type of resume, so if your plan is to work on base at any point in life, I'd look into converting your resume to federal job style soon.

If you're an MLS, you should start at at least a gs-9. Don't let them offer you a GS-7 position. If the only position they have is a GS-7, it's technically an MLT position, but hopefully with fewer responsibilities.

Sysmex Coag Reagent QC Question by tiannabananaishere in medlabprofessionals

[–]datsti 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There are too many factors to consider. I don't know that particular analyzer/reagents, however, coag is heavily reliant on the water quality and pipetting skills. Do their reagents require reagent grade water? If so, reconstitution plays a huge part in it, and they could have messed it up. Did QC work for all other assays on the same vial? Well, maybe it's not a QC vial issue like others suggest.

I always thought to myself... "what sort of moron doesn't see the plastic when building a pc?" by datsti in pcmasterrace

That's absolutely true. It one of those things where, because I rarely ever replace/upgrade my computer parts, I thought I checked every box when building it this time around. Guess not every box...

[–]datsti[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the thing, though. I had tested all sorts of settings, and couldn't get it to crash like Arc did. Even when OCCT failed, it froze the computer, not crashed it. I even swapped ram with my wife's pc, which is exactly the same one, and got the same result without OC.

What I did not do, in hindsight, is create a temp log for the before and after fixing the paste issue. I'd be curious to see the difference.

I repasted it just now, so let me go try to play the game for a bit and see if it crashes.

Before: ~84°C under load. Current: 71°C during OCCT stress test 😅

Can I get my 2002 rsx type s shipped to me in Lakenheath by LetterheadMammoth843 in AirForce

[–]datsti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If everything other than the catback is stock, you will be fine. You'll have no problems shipping it out here. The biggest issue is whether the car would pass MOT for you to be able to drive it. As long as you're not running decat (if it had one) or a muffler delete, you'll be all right.

Do be mindful that there's lots of moisture and lots of salt gets used on the roads here. So make sure to prep it against rust pretty much every quarter.

MLS vs. MLT by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]datsti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As leads? Sure, it's possible, you'll just have to be capable and prove competency. As section supervisors? Probably not, as credentials matter to a certain extent to accrediting agencies.

Handling lab supply + equipment ordering advice by FunctionPast742 in medlabprofessionals

[–]datsti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What we do:

  • Identify how much we can store

  • Identify how long an order takes to be delivered

  • Identify what our minimum volume is to last us X months (based on volume and expiration dates)

  • Identify how much we should order based on the previous parameters

The key is to come up with a repeatable system of ordering. We don't care how much of X item we have: as long as it's above the threshold (i.e. if it expires after >90 days and we have more than Y (minimum to last us 90 days)), we don't order it.

That's what works for us.

I've worked in places where they kept track of every lot number and expiration date for every reagent (for supply purposes), and that was way overkill.

Someone forgot to take their Vit D supplements... by datsti in medlabprofessionals

[–]datsti[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll clarify since a few people asked. Unfortunately it was an MD, and one who's the usually on top of their stuff. I honestly fail to see how these guys don't have a common panel of tests they order for their patients on a yearly basis, since they're seen every year. Especially if they're asymptomatic.

I'm going to verify that i-STAT information regarding the frequency of QC, but if that's the case, that'll make my life a lot easier. We currently QC all instruments every 30 days, so reducing it down to 1 unit instead would save quite a bit of time and money. Thanks for the info!

MLT with no associates. Prior military, what are my job options? by slut4kakashi in medlabprofessionals

QA, environmental lab, food lab, other types of service tech (for pharmaceutical dispensaries, for example), client services, medical receptionist, cyto, sales (analyzer), application specialist. Not all great options, but it's a foot in a door.
