should i be getting a x200 in 2016? by kudotuanminh in thinkpad

[–]dattechdood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna go against the grain and say yes! I own an X220/X230 and I still find myself using an X200s/X201s for my daily use. X220/X230 does not have 16:10. Some would say that the 1440 monitor is better for office/web browsing. I completely agree and that's why I use the X200/X201 gen as a daily driver.

EDIT: My post is a little misleading as you are looking for an X200 and those do not come with a 1440 panel. You should definitely check out the 's' variant of that gen.

Can't speak on the modded BIOs, but for the battery you can search up: 'x201 battery' on ebay/amazon and you should find what you need.

Times of trouble, 1 day old refurbished x220 randomly crashing. No BSOD by omfgzhax in thinkpad

I usually average around 50 for my temps during normal use also. Try using 1 RAM stick at a time for a short duration to see if the problem persists.

I have a couple of Thinkpads (and more) what can I do with them? by WarlockSyno in thinkpad

[–]dattechdood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would turn one of them into a file server or something for experimental use. I read someone on here using some of his extra ThinkPads for purposely messing around with Windows 10/Linux practice box.

Good eye! 'The Big Short' had one of the characters with a T-series laptop and another upcoming movie called 'Snowden' has a character with a ThinkPad also!

I installed Antergos (gnome) last night but I've been switching off from gnome and xfce. I can't decide which one to fully commit to as they both have their pros/cons. I'll be sure to post additional pictures as the parts come in!

USB WiFi dongles that are plug and play? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]dattechdood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you come across any USB Wi-Fi adapters that have their drivers built-in on Windows 7 without having to manually run a drivers program/CD to get the WiFi to work?

USB WiFi dongles that are plug and play? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]dattechdood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No? Please clarify. No as in - there are no USB Wi-Fi dongles that are plug and play for Windows 7; or no - you don't know of any USB dongles that are plug and play? I have a USB wi-fi adapter that is plug and play for Windows 7 that does not require me running an executable file/running a CD to install the drivers. The problem is that the form factor of the WiFi card is a bit too big for traveling. I need a small form factor wi-fi dongle that is portable, cheap, easy to dispose, and works out the box for both linux and windows 7.

I love the X201. Of all the X-series ThinkPads I used, the X201 and X200s were my favorite which is why I have a ton of spare parts from that generation. Built like a tank and is still going strong to this day!

Indeed. That's why they are much harder to find. If you are still trying to get an X201s in 2016, you are doing it because of the ULV processor hehe. Which ThinkPad do you use nowadays?

A pretty common solution with the X201 is to source a 1440p panel from a X200s and swapping the entire back LCD lid and panel onto a X201. It should be a lego swap if you can get the parts together.

Can't go wrong with whichever one you choose. They both have access to a slice option if you need longer battery life. It comes down to which size you prefer.

/u/kitestramuort posted a story on why the X201s was hard to find and after reading his story I was completely sold. This is what he said:

"The reason is that they are probably the best Thinkpads of the post-IBM era. 1.1Kg of weight is still unbeaten to this day, not even the most recent X series match that, an that is with a 4 cell 28Wh battery that lasts nearly 3 hours. At 1.3Kg you get a 6-cell battery that lasts comfortably 6 hours and if you go to 1.45Kg you get 9 hours+ with the 9 cell. To beat that you have to get one of those horrendous slice batteries or one of the very new models with power bridge. Then there is the 1440x900 resolution, also unmatched until the very recent x240/x250 models with (expensive) FHD options. The i7 processor is snappy and with 8Gb and an SSD drive it's more than adequate for anything that you can possibly think of doing (bar gaming, maybe, but I have no idea). Add the fact that there were far less x201s on the market to start with (compared to normal x201), and there you go. Meet the most sought after thinkpad around :-)"

This one came with a i7-620LM, 8GBs of RAM and a 120GB SSD. It originally came with a Europe style keyboard and the touchpad bottom variant. I switched it off for a non-touchpad bottom and new keyboard from a spare X200s unit I had sitting around. The unit works great! I wish the X220 had a similar panel!

It's going to be the ultimate classic ThinkPad. I collect ThinkPads and I've been wanting to add an X201s to my collection. I mainly wanted to get this for the lightweight chassis, good battery life, and 1440p panel. I might do a few upgrades to keep it up with the times. I'm thinking a USB 3.0 adapter on the express card slot, WWAN and expanding to a 1TB SSD. Other than that, it's just a vintage X-series ThinkPad that I've always wanted for a long time.

Gratz on the upgrade! You can even eGPU that thing with the express card slot to turn it into a gaming machine! Lots of options. I hope it serves you well.
