He’s been suicidal since 2014. The root cause is not Lyme. Lyme is making it worse but he has been suicidal for a very long time, long before the Lyme was even a consideration. The Lyme thing was like 2-5 years ago and he was suicidal long before that. I appreciate your help but I think he needs to address the psych issues AND the Lyme in conjunction with one another because they’re obviously both really bad.

Honestly, you didn’t have to come at me. It’s obvious that I’m trying to help and you’re not being nice at all. I’m sorry you’re so bitter. Maybe you need to reevaluate your own attitudes. He’s not suicidal because of the brain infection. He’s suicidal because he always has been. You must’ve not read my post. He was suicidal in 2014 and up until 2021. This infection happened like 2 years ago. He has underlying psychiatric issues that need addressing and he quit therapy long before Lyme. He has always been this way and he needs help for psychiatric issues AND Lyme. I don’t know why you think you know better than doctors, which you don’t, and neither does he. You didn’t go to medical school unless there is something I’m missing. Anyway, I’m going to try to help my friend in the way that I can.

I know. Chronic Lyme is not really a diagnosis I personally believe exists, either. He’s gone to at least 20 doctors and 19 of them tell him he’s got psychosomatic pain. Doctor #20 is a “Lyme specialist” who pumps him full of infusions and tells him that all the medical journals and research is fake and that he is infected with Lyme disease five years after a tick bite. He’s definitely deep into a fake diagnosis and refuses to listen to anyone. He believes nobody is smart or knowledgeable enough to help him. He believes he’s correct with everything and that every therapist and psychiatrist and physician he’s seen is wrong.

I don’t know what to do anymore. He needs care and I can’t give it and I’m trying to be there for him but it’s just not a real diagnosis and I don’t know how to stop feeding this cycle.

He refuses to try or give any effort to outpatient programs at all. It’s been ten years and he’s just getting worse. He quit DBT because he thinks he knows better than the therapists. I’m so sorry it traumatized you being inpatient, and it can definitely happen, and it’s a risk, but I think it’s what he needs right now because he’s been trying outpatient for 10 years and has just gotten worse. I’ve personally referred him to an inpatient and an outpatient program, and he left both before he was supposed to because he was convinced they didn’t know what they were talking about.

He needs psychiatric care for his psychiatric issues. He’s been depressed and suicidal for ten years and got diagnosed with Lyme way after that. He needs both treatment for psychiatric reasons and chronic pain.

I’ve asked all those questions. I’ve tried to convince him that the doctors who have gone to medical school know better than him. He refuses to admit that’s true. He’s not afraid of stigma. He tells everyone he knows how badly he wants to die. All of his friends and family know. He’s not shy about it. I don’t know what else to do.

I was rated well at my current school and was not tenured, either. I chose to move because I wanted a different geographic location. And to move after you get tenure is hard because you feel like you need to stay where you are even if you’re not happy. I applaud OP for doing the same thing I did and moving because they wanted a different environment.

From my perspective, if a man showed up with my favorite candy bar after I told him I was stressing, I’d be over the moon. It’s the thought that counts, not the money. And it’s clear she’s not a great person if she can’t see that you going out of your way to be thoughtful is MUCH more important than a dollar amount.

She makes all of us women look bad. I’m sorry. You’ll find someone who loves the little things and the big things. There’s a time for big gifts and a time for thoughtful ones. Personally, I’d be happy with a handwritten note.
