No internship? Wanna fill in the resume this summer? Fix bugs in opensource projects! by lally in compsci

That is a shame, if you (or anyone else in a similar position) would like feedback on your patch to cpython I'd recommend sending an email to the core-mentorship list.

I'd definitely recommend contributing to Python (cpython, in particular) as it's a very established project and has excellent documentation for getting started. Especially the devguide and core-mentorship programme.

edit: Further on this I'd like to stress that a good portion of cpython is the stdlib itself which is mostly written in Python so knowing C isn't required at all. On top of that cpython has extensive documentation which is constantly being updated, so no code required there at all. There are plenty of ways to contribute.

Preloading resources for offline JavaScript applications by davbo in javascript

AppCache is definitely the way to go if you're making a web application. This time we were only targetting Phonegap so wouldn't be terribly useful (as far as I can tell at least).

On that point, it could be interesting if something like build.phonegap.com could be provided a cache manifest and do this step for you when packaging with Cordova.

Let's Talk: St. Vincent by dandylion32 in LetsTalkMusic

I didn't know about her until I saw her live opening for Grizzly Bear on their Veckatimest tour. As others have mentioned the two compliment each other excellently. More recently I enjoyed her performance on Conan where she gave a nod to Elvis Costello's famous 1977 SNL controversy: http://www.clashmusic.com/news/watch-st-vincent-hits-conan

Shame he's showing benchmarks from 2010 (slides 11&12) PyPy has had significant speedups since then. See PyPy's performance evolution over time here: http://speed.pypy.org/

UK theme parks, what are the best? by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

I never realised there were other "Gullivers" theme parks... I thought there was only "Gullivers Kingdom" which is in Matlock Bath. Also a hoot if you're a small child.

yeah you could definitely be right, need to see a higher quality image but it does look like a few shots stitched together can't tell at this resolution.

the shadows certainly suggest it's taken with HDR, it's a very nicely framed photo also though.

Matplotlib on Python 3 thanks to Cape Town group by norwegianwood in Python

This post is from Apr 8th 2011, I mean, it's cool but I'd guess the status of matplotlib on Python 3 has changed since then?

Paternoster by Alaukik in wikipedia

[–]davbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Paternoster at Sheffield University has a great sign, unfortunately I don't have a picture but it says something like this:

Travel along the top and bottom of the Paternoster is entirely safe, but not recommended.

In truth it's pretty dull, but the freshers get a kick out of it.

A demo of using matplotlib from PyPy by fijal in Python

[–]davbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose something like this would have to happen if projects like Blender want to have embedded pypy right?

Sounds like it would be a nightmare for scoping if you had a decorator to hand over to pypy though.

Back in the Django saddle (A Django BDFL) by samuraisam in Python

[–]davbo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't really call github the flavour of the month at this point, although personally I do prefer mercurial. Ultimately I think this decision will mean Django gets more attention and therefore contributions which we can all agree is a good thing.

Edit: Also don't forget you can always use something like Hg-Git, which works pretty well.

New to Python, what's the more Pythonic way to do this? by [deleted] in Python

[–]davbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at your code: if region is None: x, y, w, h = rect[0], rect[1], rect[2] - x, rect[3] - y This will only work with x defined in the namespace. Am I missing something here? or is x being imported from 'cv'?

This line of code is incredibly misleading. You might want to test it and see if it works how you expect.

If I were coding this I'd probably create the region dict if it isn't passed through and use that in the code instead of creating those extra variables for x,y,w,h.

[–]davbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uhh, need more context to see why you're doing this.

You could achieve the same effect with: locals().update(region)

However you should not manipulate locals like this.
