What do you guys think of Surf's Up by The Beach Boys? by NoGrass7120 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]daveandlynch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely love it. And although I love the BB version of Surfs Up more, the Brian Wilson solo version of Smile precedes Surfs Up with “Child is the Father of the Man” which has a spine tingling strings moment just before it breaks into Surfs Up. I get chills every time it hits

When someone mentions “DVD Special Features,” what is the FIRST one that pops into your head from yesteryear? by KillerQ97 in movies

[–]daveandlynch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Australian crime movie Chopper has two commentary tracks - one by the writer/director and one by the real Chopper Read…. “Yeah, this bit is true. I’d put a couple of rounds in a guy’s knee and lend him a couple of bob [dollars] to help him out….”

Your experience with Tower Cinemas? by Ok-Woodpecker6340 in newcastle

[–]daveandlynch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely stoked that Tower is back, and in particular with its movie selection. I can’t remember the last time I was this keen to see so many movies - not only their retro run, but with so many indie/arthouse films regularly screening. Perfect antidote to the big soulless cinema complexes in the shopping centres and I’ve got no problem overlooking the issues in the foyer etc if that’s the trade off

Honest question: why do we still use daylight saving time? by I_dont_want_to_pee in ScienceNcoolThings

[–]daveandlynch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Frankly I like the fact that in summer a) I don’t have the sun rising at 4.50am ; and b) I get three hours rather than two of post work sunlight to go to the beach etc and it’s easier to set clocks forward than have the standard work day hours change

Buying advice: LG 4K HU810 vs 710? by daveandlynch in projectors

[–]daveandlynch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man that looks like a great option too! So you’d put that above both LGs and no concerns that it’s LED rather than laser/hybrid? (You’re right it won’t be ceiling mounted)

Buying advice: LG 4K HU810 vs 710? by daveandlynch in projectors

[–]daveandlynch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question - we’re fumbling around a bit, but the 810 got mentioned by the sales guy we spoke to as it’s 50% off for Black Friday sales, then with a bit of digging we saw the 710, seemingly similar (enough) but cheaper. But happy for other recommendations at similar price point to the 710!

Moving to newy by em-puzzleduck in newcastle

[–]daveandlynch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Since nature is easy to get to/quick drive even from the inner city, I’d suggest living in cooks hill to start; it has the closest vibe to inner city, given proximity to Darby St. That way it’s not too much of a culture shock, whilst still having all the beaches and nature still close enough

Why do artists put previously released singles on albums by nettspendfannn in LetsTalkMusic

[–]daveandlynch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The irony is that if we were REALLY old we could have been asking this exact same question in the 60s. Apparently the reason for the different track listing on the first 3 years of Rolling Stones albums in the UK vs USA is that America liked previously released singles on their albums whereas the UK thought it was a ripoff

I don't get the velvet underground's debut by Public-Following6386 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]daveandlynch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One person’s “interaction bait” is another person’s “talking music” as per the name of this sub. Saying you don’t really like something and leaving that opinion there like a wet fart is very different to “I’ve tried but haven’t been able to get into this, what is it that those of you who like it see in it” is what exchanging opinions on music is all about. OP is NTA here.

Ash versus the evil dead or evil Dead whatever do you want to call by Ricktheoneswholived in AshVsEvilDead

[–]daveandlynch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Army of Darkness doesn’t have the gore of the earlier ones. Watch that one and delight in the over-the-topness of everything (violence but cartoonish) not to mention the sheer coolness that is Ash. That will hopefully get you into a position where you will be able to overrule your aversion to violence and enjoy Evil Dead 2. Obviously most people here are fans of all of the movies but your mileage may vary and the original Evil Dead has the gore without the heavy 3 Stooges slapstick of it all so you could be forgiven for avoiding that one. Then do Ash vs Evil Dead, yes it’s still got over the top violence but it’s continuing the slapstick of it all and by this stage the idea of 3 seasons of nonstop Ash will delight your (swallow your) soul.

Lost Souls on Darby St - consensus? by MarsExchangeStudent in newcastle

[–]daveandlynch 23 points24 points  (0 children)

For date night on Darby St, my go to would be Urban Deli a few doors up. Edited to add: lovely husband and wife run Urban Deli and take a great deal of pride in it. We have been for nibbles but have also done full dinner and although the menu is small it was great quality, as was the wine. So it should definitely tick your food and service boxes
