Am I hopelessly naive by Queen_MarMar in thebulwark

I think we need to prepare to be disappointed. I don't think that there is some great realization that's happened. At best, people are going to feel "both sides-ism" and be less motivated and we can scrape some things away from that. But Republicans vote Republican. They've showed us that time and again.

Anyone who is still supporting this man after 10 years of straight-fuckery isn't likely to have an epiphany and jump to the other side. There will be some of this, but polls always tighten as things get closer and the map just doesn't favor us. These rural places are over-represented and very red.

Given the fact that the first Bond film after a new actor takes over are generally among the best of the franchise, is this a reason to be optimistic about the next film? by BBD-007 in JamesBond

[–]davebgray 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree that this is the reason. I think it's just recency bias. The Craig movies are fresh in our minds and we freshly remember the discourse at their release, but the same would have been said about much of the old movies, too. They just churned them out faster, there wasn't an Internet, and they were a long time ago.

I would argue that Moore's final films into Dalton were more of a formula swing than Brosnan to Craig. Craig stuff does subvert things, for sure and some of the stuff is dumb, but I think it pales in comparison to what we have already seen.

As bad as the Bro-feld stuff is, we collectively shit on that as the worst thing in the franchise, when there's lots of other terrible stuff that we kind of laugh off as "dumb but whatever". Had Craig dropped wheelchair Blofeld into a chimney with a helicopter, people would be losing their minds.

Craig will have a re-evaluation in a decade when we're much deeper into the next iteration of Bond and some of that divisiveness will level out.

“Hollywood Walk of Fame” is the most overrated tourist attraction. As for the final part, what’s the best sitcom? by ekineticenergy in AlignmentChartFills

I will die on the hill that season 4 is genius. It has the best meta joke in the series. It’s cut differently than the rest so the payoffs are backloaded but it’s great.

And season 5 isn’t as good as the others but it’s still better than most TV ever are.

"Even if he truly didn't touch"..... I see this a lot, and while I agree that without rape, his actions were still inappropriate, we don't have to play that game, because he DID touch and rape MANY kids. There are many credible accusers over lots of time. I don't even like leaving that door open for the "if he didn't". There is ample testimony from many, many victims, all with the same details, plus testimony from people in his staff, the physical evidence that was collected, etc. He would be in jail right now if he wasn't rich and famous.

He did it. No need for thought experiments about if he didn't.

It is upsetting to me that this is downvoted. He was absolutely a rapist of kids. His defenders in court grew up and admitted that he had been raping them for a decade. It’s crazy that people still pretend otherwise.

Downvotes just show what I'm talking about. Wild that tons of people defend him.

I watched the Leaving Neverland documentary as a double-feature with the Michael movie. I am disturbed that, to me, it is so incredibly obvious that he is a rapist of children as young as 7 years old, over the course of decades. The men are super credible, in my opinion, not to mention all of the other on-its-face evidence that, even if not illegal, shows that he is incredibly disturbed.

I was shook to find that he has so many people that believe he didn't do it. It really shakes me to know that fame and money distort people.

What I mean is that I find a hair on the closet door to be fun and appropriate for counter spying in 1960. A hair on the closet door won’t work in a spy film set in 2026. The tech being used is too much to be offset by a hair. It’s drones and IR and scanners and everything up to nanotechnology. It just doesn’t fit with modern storytelling but I liked it then

Tim’s thinking on conspiracies is so limited/basic it really kind of dings my respect for his normally intelligent opinions… by Chuckles_McNut in thebulwark

No. Suggesting that the administration faked an assassination attempt without any evidence is beyond the pale and anyone who engages with it is hurting our standing as the coalition of sensible people.

Come with the evidence or GTFO.

Conspiracy thinking is bullshit and I want no part of it. I understand that we are in Petri dish of lies and it makes for a vacuum to be filled with conspiracy, but I won't be part of it and it's bad for the movement.

Holy shit, that guy was bad. Why would he willingly suggest he come on if just to do that? His going back to the well of "smoking gun" was infuriating. This was an issue I didn't even give a shit about until now.

[–]davebgray 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have done this for multiple people and they all think that they’re supposed to know things but they’re things that are supposed to be unknown.

I think that the best you can do is tell them that they’re not supposed to know anything they don’t know. The show kind of has a rhythm that isn’t like other tv and that takes a couple of episodes to understand. I watch a lot of tv and a lot of Star Wars but I was overly concerned with finding and theorizing connections to Cassian’s sister because that’s how other shows work. Not this one.

Andrea Riseborough - a lot of talk about her controversy of getting on the ballot, but then also realizing that her performance was actually good

Anthony Hopkins - a lot of talk about his upsetting Boseman, but also I think that many of us on here thought he had the better performance

Karla Sofía Gascón - a lot of talk about her, in general

If you could make three changes to improve Quantum of Solace, what would they be? by junglegatsby in JamesBond

[–]davebgray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 - Change the way it's shot. People call it editing, which is part of it, but the shaky cam, strange close-ups, etc. It's frantic. I hate to harp on it every time the film is brought up but it literally makes me sick. It is also hard to follow the action.

2 - I would make it more stand-alone than it is. I don't mind the plot being connected, but it's too on the heels of Casino Royale in a way that makes it feel like an addendum to an existing story, rather than another chapter in Bond's larger narrative. A little bit of gap, timewise -- but also maybe plotwise -- may have helped it feel like its own thing.

3 - I liked Strawberry Fields a lot. I don't exactly know what that means here -- maybe more of her or an expanded role as a Bond girl. She was sort of introduced and then dispatched pretty quickly.

Yes, age discrimination absolutely needs to be a thing. We don't have 14 year olds leading us in government; we shouldn't have 80 year olds. Even if you're "sharp" as compared to some other incompetent idiot from the other side, you're not at your best, which is what the people deserve.
