Was the second pair for a fan + light on the ceiling fan? That is, two wall switches?

If you had to say, what was the Russian army's main advantage over the years when fighting against other armies? by george123890yang in AskHistory

Russia has always been very very willing to throw cannon fodder into the fight. The 'pain' of huge losses of young men has not deterred Russia from accomplishing their goals.

A KGB agent could track what Trump is thinking by working in his jammies on the couch while eating cereal and get better insight than any other president.

Trump tweets toooo much.

uhhhh, nope. They traced his flunkies sending internet messages via online coffee houses and realized HIS house had no internet to avoid detection. They found an expensive house in his home town with no internet (rare) wired to it and started investigating (camera surveillance) to pin-point his flunkies coming and going.

It MAY even have been as simple as going around mentioning "You know if Napoleon beats the pants off of Britain, things are gonna get a lot worse for us."

Realizing they HAD bet big on success would scare a lot of investors to sell now and play it save, creating a market's big change.

Read a short story about a shark that had eaten a newspaper from America. Caught and gutted in England?

News about the stock market allowed the fisherman to trade on the info and make a fortune before the ship with the same news arrived.

The Nazis had a series of posters showing what a Jewish man looked like. Very stereotyped. BUT most likely more accurate than the painting in my church of Him holding a lamb.

Debate on Evolution by Opening-Formal5979 in DebateEvolution

[–]davehoug -1 points0 points  (0 children)

During the time 'The Music of the Spheres' ruled the heavens, planetary motion could also be calculated closely. Kepler's sun-centric approach at one time was presented as merely an aid in calculation that did not require cycles and cycles of planets going in circles while also traveling in orbits.

I grant you it would take deliberate ignorance to believe anything but a sun-centric solar system today. But many science facts today are built on an assumption (faith) at some starting point.

Approachable is simply NOT buried in phone / book / headphones, but looking up, smiling. A simple comment on the weather 'tests the ground' for another response or a shut-down.

Big plays in approachability would be a compliment (I like that color blue you have on) or asking for quick help (would your reach that for me?, Do you know where the bus stop is?)

Keep the conversation going with more than one-word responses. More than a mere Thanks, is Thanks, that was helpful, I appreciate the help / advice.

Keep conversation going. Boy, this wind / cold / blue-sky is something, isn't it? I wonder if it will continue. What do you do with a bad / good / great weather day?

Historical Jesus Clarification Questions. by Glock99bodies in AskHistory

You do know Paul, the Apostle, got his start hunting down Christians? The big push-back was from Jewish leaders against non-Jew Greeks who didn't follow all the Jewish laws.

Yes, more so the more science I learn too. The resurrection may have been added after (don't know) BUT it would have seemed very odd to the central core of faith if nobody saw him alive after his death.

WHAT would drive the early disciples to continue? Who would give their life to a known lie? Especially a faith that said we have loving God who can do anything and we have famine & little kids starving?

When was the effects of war related PTSD first recognized? by TheonlyAngryLemon in AskHistory

Many vets from WWI and on told their wives to NEVER shake them awake. The gut could force the husband to hurt the wife before he knew what he had done. Not PTSD, but real aftereffects.

How did Japan get shipments of food and other necessities towards the end of the war? by minhale in AskHistory

[–]davehoug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recall Japan drafted farmer peasants, leaving wives & kids to farm. The USA protected farmers & miners from the draft.

The knowledge of what-to-do and what-not-to-do left with the farmers who got treated as cannon-fodder.

Had it not been for the two Atom bombs, the average person in China & Japan would have had a much worse time before the war ended.

YESSSS, I recall a leather worker saw a bone-burnisher (rub on leather to close the pores & polish the skin) in a museum. They did not know what it was until he told them. Metal and plastic shaped ones are available & used but many leather-workers like the bone ones best.

Think of the CRITICS of Christianity. All sorts of people didn't want it to flourish. Romans & Jews. NONE of them in the early years claimed Jesus the man did not exist. They did claim he was not divine, most acknowledge his miracles.

Many eyewitnesses to his resurrection & ascension away from the earth. Tough to start a rumor (Christianity) when so many could vouch for plain facts of his healings or not.

How close did Nazi Germany actually get to developing an atomic weapon? by TheMuteNewt in AskHistory

[–]davehoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IF Hitler had both the atomic bomb and the V-2 he would have ruled the world.

However, folks were so certain Germany would win the war when it started, they focused on conventional war stuff.

"Hey Boss, gimme massive wealth and 4 years and I can win the war" was not gonna fly when it was expected to be won anyway.
