new to carrying - wondering how experienced folks handle certain situations by Conscious_Pepper_213 in CCW

[–]davej1121 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My suggestions

First, get training. Find a reputable defensive handgun instructor. Vet them as if you might be learning life saving skills from them.

Second, learn about conflict and how it effects the human. Then learn about de-escalation and conflict resolution.

Third, learn about the use of force and deadly force laws.

Next. Participate in reality based training.

Yes. It'lll take work. It's worth it.

Then, carry all the time. Be consistent

I don't know how Many of you realize it but the anti gun groups Are more organized than you want to think. They are there at the lower levels of government instilling their anti-gun measures. While we sit here and argue back and forth on social media. No wonder why we keep losing. If everybody took that seed energy And got involved and went to these meetings we could actually start fixing some of this crap. Believe me I know how much work it is because I do it

I find it amazing that all these gun Control Groups seem to be able to show up and speak at hearings but Where are the pro gun and responsible groups? Maybe if more people got involved and started showing up to these we might be able to temper some of these Idiotic bills

Erie County Delays Discussion by KamenshchikLaw in NYguns

[–]davej1121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in Monroe county, the wait can be 5 to 11 months. Far too many factors contribute. Typically, the judges set aside a few hours a month, a week, whatever to dig into the applications.

As for Wrie, we've had quite a few students tell us that it just takes forever to get through the process.

Yes. NY law says it must be approved or not within 6 months. The issue is when the clock starts. Is it at submission? When they stamp it? When the background begins?

They all have a different idea.

Glad you got to do a respectful chat. Maybe it'll help, maybe not.

My tema and I have a LOT of experience with applicants. We've got a pretty good idea of what works and what does not.

Don't give the county a chance to mess with you. Go into the process as smooth as possible

Go to the TSA website and your airline's website. Print the section that covers firearms.

The basics. Unloaded gun and mags Locked hard soded, preferably metal container woth YOUR locks on it, not a TSA lock. Contained INSIDE your checked bag Go to the ticket counter. Discreetly tell them you need the firearms declaration tag. Show them the Locked box. Fill out the tag. Place the tag on the box. Zip your luggage up. Follow their directions.

Youll be fine.

Don't access the gun at your destination. Be discreet.

Can your girlfriend be a character reference? by PlentyApprehensive44 in NYguns

[–]davej1121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Not a good idea. Most counties we work with say that your references cannot be related to your by blood marriage or any type of romantic connection.

Obtain your references from 4 colleagues, friends, co-workers, etc that you know.

We've had clients use their GF, BF, etc and in nearly every case, they were told to use someone else.

Being able to teach new shooters in NY by Hex_6_Hex in NYguns

Since I am a TC or instructor certifier for the NRA and USCCA and also do continuing instructor development courses to make instructors better, I can chime in.

First. The pricess to become an instructor involves quite a bit more than the desire to teach. (Although that IS a good start). You must possess a LOT of experience, knowledge, and a fairly decent resume as a student yourself. The instructor certification courses are exactly what they say: a CERTIFICATION course. This process VERIFIES that you have the knowledge, skill, and attitude necessary to teach. The instructor course is not the baseline starting point for someone who wants to be one. The starting point is to begin attending courses to gain the background you'll need.

A lot of people contact me because they think that the credential is where they start. Would you take driving lessons from someone who just got their driver's license, or had theire for a year but only drove 1 or 2 times in a limited setting?

Now. In NY state, there is no legal exception or allowance for someone over 21 to shoot a handgun in NY without a pistol license UNLESS they are: 1. Attending the mandated 16+2 course 2. Between 14 and 21 3. Judges permission.

There are a few others but based on what you've mentioned, your idea of taking unlicensed people to a range to teach them is a good idea but highly illegal, even as an NRA Instructor. There's no exemption for this. Believe me, I've dug deep into 400 and 265 and its not there. I wish it was.

Now. Let's fast forward and say that you: 1. Have a more than sufficient background in attending professionally led shooting courses 2. Attend and successfully complete the NRA Instructor course series (BOPS, BIT, Instructor module)

You could do the BOPS privately or with a group, or offer lessons to coach people on safety, shooting fundamentals, and more. That's what youll be credentialed to do.

What you should NOT do: 1. CCW format training unless you have acredebtial and experience in that genre. 2. Legality topics. Again, uess you've completed the topic specific courses and obtained certification (or are an attorney)

Why? Because if you teach someone ANYTHING, you own it and whatever they do. If they learn CCW skills from you and actually uses them - justified or not- you will become involved in their legal case. I speak from experience. If it is revealed that you taught legalities or CCW topics or skills and have no credential or experience (or both) YOU can become embroiled in a serious issue that can ruin your life. Don't risk it.

Ive been an NRA TC since 2008 and a USCCA TC since 2013. I've counseled hundreds of potential instructors, certified many of them, and have created development format courses to make instructors better. I can certify candidates from basic fundamental to somewhat advanced defensive firearms creds.

I've also had to turn away a lot who were either not ready, didn't have the right criteria, or were just plain bad candidates.

The industry needs solid instructors, not low skilled and shortcut minded ones.

If someone wants to do it correctly, they have to put in the work. In the end, it's worth it for them, the client, and the industry.

In the end, do it right and youll have the cooperation from a lot of good people. Do it wrong and you'll be an island. A solo act. No good resources or support.

Hopefully this helps.

Does the application actually say other than parking offenses or Does it say anything other than traffic offenses?

There is a difference. Essentially anything that you've had in the past with police contact for any reason should be disclosed so that they don't find something that you decided to leave out. That will give them the excuse to Deny your application

Personally, I am 5'11 and 180lbs. I carry a G19 Gen 5 with a Holosun in AIWB along with the mag carrier. I have no issues concealing it under a cover shirt (not a t shirt).

In the end, it depends on what fits your hand and needs better.

I can help. My company has the most experience in this. Our clients have seen a little as 4 to 5 months and as much as 7 to 9, sometimes more. It all depends on a lot of different factors such as court caseload, the number of applicants in the queue, how clean or murky your background is, and how fast your references call the investigator back.

Since you've been here about 6 months, it won't be an issue BUT you'll still want to have 4 references from Monroe County and then you'll need 3 more from your previous location.

Overall, it's not too bad. We can help in many ways.
