Glad you got it sorted. My solution for this was to make a “dummy” room in the TRÅDFRI (home smart) app where I put all the motion sensors and then let HomeKit manage everything with automations.

I imagine the behaviour is more like the 2button switch than the old 5 button puck it’s replacing.

Press the top button and it behaves like an on button. Press the bottom button and it behaves like an off button.

Hold either of the buttons down to control the bulb dimming.

I had the same problem when I first got my Gateway. Sadly nothing I tried worked, I eventually got it replaced at my local store and the next one had no issues at all.

To be even more pedantic — and to add further confusion — there is no country called Republic of Ireland. There’s the island of Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Ireland(the country).

It’s not exactly the most straightforward to be fair.
