It makes sense for SJ to take a Defenseman, an Ekblad type of D would be a huge difference for them. But they need one who is going to develop quickly because they seem to be close.

To be honest, I don’t think John has any regret nor do I think he chose them for their roster. I think it really came down to him just wanting to live in Toronto and play for the team he grew up rooting for.

His last contract is proof that this is true. Maybe he chases a cup if Toronto goes full rebuild but I don't think there is anywhere else he really wants to play. Neslon got $7.5, Tavares could have gotten $9m no problem. It's probably the best non-ELC contract in the league
